I have been avoiding studio monitors for a while due to my living situation. I would just not be able to use them all that often. Phil mentioned a while ago that he thought he could almost master with his seinnheiser HD600s so I bought a pair and, I must say, they are amazing headphones. however, I have done a bunch of reading and it appears mixing with headphones is hard. getting the bass right, stereo width, making it not too dry, all challenges. Plus, one of the tutorials Chris’ comment was that headphones were not conducive for making music.br
br
so, with all that I stumbled across a used set of KRK V6 studio monitors for $50 each. I went ahead and got them, but does anybody have an opinion if this was a good purchase? Will these work well for mixing for me?br
br
thanks!br

KRKs are decent monitors but have a smallish cone so the bass wont be represented 100% truthfully.br
br
Between the 2 you should have a good enough set up to get good mixes. although it always takes time to get used to the differences with new monitors.br
br
I would suggest doing a lot of A/B ing with tracks. and test on different set ups. i still like to run mixes on my 5.1 home cinema system and in my car while comparing to other material. Every system will show up a different element of the mix that could be improved. br
br
dont forget mixing is a very difficult skill, something that takes a lot of practice and patients. im still learning and have to work really hard to get things right on my super fancy speakers. There are just so many variables.br

What are your super fancy speakers sound card
Dynaudio BM15a and UA Apollo
phil johnston (24/06/2013)
Dynaudio BM15a and UA Apollo
br
br
The speakers are pricey and the sound card looks cool, does its software take a lot of your computer resources?
no quite the opposite I run all my mix plugins on its DSP which frees up CPU for other things.
the UAD seems really great! br
Does the Apollo only relieve the CPU on UAD plugins? br
yeah only works for UAD plugins.br
br
I mostly use it for the comps eq and reverb
It would be awesome to have something like that, couse in the final stage of mixing there is loads of processes going on. br
Just put in an SSD disk on my MBP and now it can handle a lot more! but something like UAD would be great to complement the cpu with. br
But thats for another day when i can afford it.br
br
what are your favorites of the UAD plugins?
The newer 1176 comps get a lot of action. they sound great on almost everything.br
br
Cambridge and Neve EQs are great.br
br
Shadow hills comp on the master is greatbr
br
all the precision mastering stuff works really well too.br
br
I have about 200 days of my NFR left… will have to choose a few to buy when it runs out. first on the list would be 1176. then maybe shadow hills. maybe neve EQs.br
br
Reverbs and stuff are good too its just there are some great alternatives like the valhalla stuff that isnt far of or maybe even better in some ways.br
br
UAD really shine at real analog sounding stuff. Id love to see a synth or something. UAD Diva would be cool.br
br
Awesome, i saw dave pensado using and recommending the shadowhill compressor (the hardware) . But as you say the plugins are emulating the analog hardware really well.br
would love to try the UAD plugins. br
br
Oh they have a summer sale at UAD atm so the 1176s is at 30% off. br
If you compare the waves CLA 76s the UAD 1176, Can you really tell a difference?br
br
So you get to try all the plugins for a limited time when you buy the Apollo?
The waves do a similar thing and sound good but there is something missing when you push them… they dont have the same warm brightness the UAD ones have.br
br
You get 2 week demos normally… they gave us a bit longer so we could test them out and do a few videos etc. will start doing them soon when ive used them a bit more.

br
You run plugs on its DPS can you give me more info or a link to explain it more please
The Apollo has 4 sharc DSP chips.br
br
when you use one of UADs plugins it runs on the Apollo instead of your computer. so you can have tons of stuff going and use very little CPU.
