On this mac at college, i noticed a folder on the desktop titled ‘SA how to make progressive house on logic’, i clicked into it to see if it was infact SA and what do i notice within? note.txt with clear evidence that it’s a shared file.
Wnkers.
I promptly deleted it.
It’s cnts like that who cause this site to nearly go under.
It’s the nature of the beast really, never going to stop
I’ve said it already…
But I’ve got google alerts set up for different bits & pieces - The amount of Rapidshare / Hotfile links to warez sites for software / sample packs - AND SA Vids - is an eye opener.
TBH… Was thinking of getting rid - cos 95% of whats coming back is utter muck.
Such a shame. I’ve followed the links onto different sites - and theres loads of SA stuff out there. People saying “Nice one” and everything. Often wonder how many of the registered members here are some of these people.
I know you are not gonna stop it totally. Theres probably no point trying… But how useful would it be for SA to say something about it in one of the Vids in each series. Maybe some writing on a screen?
I’d hate for this site to go under. I’m in college now, my fees are going up by 1500 next year to 3k p.annum. Theres going to be a muthafkkin stinker of a budget here in a few weeks & tbh - could easily go & get these Vids from elsewhere. I could do without spending.
haha! and get this - Just found out my Cat has to get injections every 6weeks, cos she has an auto-immune disease! Mad or what - But more money out the door! :w00t:
But I think that its important to support whats happening here. Thats why I intend to continue subscribing until I die. I really believe in whats happening here. Its ****ing unique.
The Music Production parts of the site are pretty good too! LOL :hehe:
I think if SA were to go for the guilt jugular in a frame @ the end of the Vids - something like - “Please support Music Eduction. Everyone benefits. Dont steal knowledge. The Karma Police know who you are”
… Then it might just tug a % of heartstrings.
Yeah that’s a great idea ICN, the thing is it’s not like it’s expensive to use this place. If you look at all the other tutorial sites out there, they charge you £100s / £1000s where as here, what is it now? £90 for the year?
It’s such a bargin for what you get, f*ck sakes it costs £3290 per year to go Uni (which the Uni officials are actually trying to raise right now to £6000 per year).
What may be an option, which i’ve been studying about recently is actually what some artists have been doing, which is… giving their music away free, but letting people ‘donate’ what they think it’s worth / what they can afford.
It actually has turned out really successful for these artists. Today I was listening to this interview from Thom Yorke (Radiohead) and he was talking about it. Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) did a similar thing!
I’m not sure how that could adapt to tutorials, but the idea is there. People would much rather come to the site to download directly free than from a torrent site.
So with that in mind, because of the higher ‘hit rate’ Sonic could take advantage of that by having some advertisments on the website and/or the beginning of some of the videos.
So they could not only make money from the revenue of advertising but from donations too.
Everyones a winner.
Yeah… A Donate Button / Link at the top of the page would be cool.
Another Forum (free) that I am on - has a system where you can donate whatever, and you get a “spethial badge” to say that you are a “Supporter”.
They also have a graph over the top of the site, telling you how many % of donations have covered the running costs etc… To be fair, I usually only see it @ about 25% Max anytime I have ever looked at it over the last few years.
I think that its cool. It adds a bit of ****ing pride to things.
Even release some Free Mini Tips as an experiment, with a Donate what you want option. Would be interesting to see what the result - if any would be.
If there was a dontate button & an extra little Icon-y thing that you’d get (like Techno Militia etc…), I’m sure people would support - whether they were a subscriber or not. I certainly would give a couple of €€€ during the year.
Just keep it simple … at the end of a tutorial video, put a simple message saying; “if you have not paid to watch this video, remember, its the same as rape, thank you for your time”
haha! I could comment on that & belive me, with whats on the tips of my fingers, it would be hilarious - but I actually think that we should all give our 2c to this - Seriously
What could we do as a community to help stop this?
Would registering on these sites & leaving a reply be appropriate?
Maybe thats something that we could all do?
Just an idea?

Don’t think commenting is gonna have much impact on a serial downloader. I think the download option for the videos may have, as many expected, opened up a can of internet worms. Its nice to have a download option, but like you said, there must be someone using this site seeding the videos out.
When the videos were just streaming, they were pretty locked down in the browser.
TBH the download may make it easier but people use video capture to copy streams so its not going to have a great impact
Also I think the only thing we can do as forum members is do exactly what we do here help each other out and have a laugh - and hopefully that will encourage people to sign up and join this great if not rather wierd community

Oh you’re right! (Gav takes off his war paint and unlaces his commando boots)
It is the nature of the beast sadly.
When starting a business with digital content it’s just something you have to factor in I guess. Be it video, audio, software etc. There will always be people who pay, and those that don’t.
If you keep providing good content, then they will come. Or something like that.
@bang - yeah, keep the content coming… keep building.
@slender… Thats a nice suggestion. A lot less confrontational
rob when i was at the ATM the server there was full with every sample pack Zero-g Ever released its one of those things. the problem is that these colleges don’t have huge amount of funds and unfortunately decide to turn the other check while the students upload to the servers
i bed the mac’s you’re using to are really old and sluggish too.
Jon it’s nothing to do with the college, it was something someone had placed on the desktop not the server.
Plus the macs are top of the range so you’re wrong buddy.
Education establishments used to be very slack with illegal content - but these days they have to be ultra carefull as new laws came into place that they would be responsible for any content on their computers - I don’t know if the law has ever beenenforced in this country but I did read about a college in the States that got some hefty fines and was sued by software houses
There is really fcuk all we can do about it. Obviously the first person to upload the videos had to have signed up/or bought them from here.
If some idiot wants to pay money to download stuff and give it away on the net just to look cool that’s his problem.
It’s probably the same kids in school that used to give away their lunch money to the cool kids in an attempt to fit in…
But we all knew they were still knobs.
Like I know a couple of guys who have got sonic/videos from the net…
Do I think a less of them, of course not.
I genuinely know they can’t afford the subscription so if it’s there for free what’s stopping them.
My point is I don’t blame the downloader but the uploader.

Fair play dude ATM must be pulling in more money these days.
i did say it would have been something someone else uploaded.
