[quote]jon_fisher (03/08/2010)[hr]i know howards a good friend of mine so i may be a little one sided here but in all fairness i’ve read a lot of posts with sarcastic comments like “howards got an app for that lol” or “maybe howard would do a tutorial lol”. i can see why someone would take this as personal and eventually get pissed about it.
when you write something like “howards got an app for that lol” once it’s a joke but more than twice starts to wear thin and every other thread becomes personal.
NNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEways. Some good suggestions at the start of the post, when it was on topic. I wasn’t really looking for perc loop ideas but some good ones were mentioned that I will try. And I definitely like the FabFilter Freak2 suggestion. Im gonna check that out. I’m sure they got a demo.

If you are using Ableton, like I think I mentioned, you can throw a randomizer in there. The reason you are hearing different is because of variation. The brain subconsciously hears these different timbers and it peaks interest without even really being able to notice. Thats really important especially when you hear alot of other noises going on at the same time, your brain doesnt know whats different, but it does know that SOMETHING is different. What you can do as well is for instance, create four or 6 instances of the same audio hi hat loop. you can mess with the clip envelopes and change the velocity for random notes if you would like. Another idea would be to change the groove just for that clip. And you can have multiple grooves going on at different times in the song. Be careful wtih this though. EEVEN ANOTHER idea is to have a specific amount of swing on a track, but then change the AMOUNT of the swing as the song progresses. This way you dont have to buy any plugins to get the effect you want. Why would you anyways…you dont need to!

I would say where you bury them in the mix has a lot to do with it. Take the tops off them to start and then maybe dampen the transitions down a bit so they are not so prominent. An easy up and down filter over 8 bars and where you can drop them out then do.
I found that mine got a bit repetative in a few tracks and I ended up deleting them out of most of the track. It’s a tough call be hard on yourself.

yes yes +lay off the howiegroove hes a legend full stop .
Good suggestions Howie. Now I got plenty of things to experiment with. Never used the randomizer. Got to look for it now when I get home.
Yeah Stuart, I noticed in my last track I posted that when I start to fade in the brief perc it actually sounds better at the start of the fade as oppose when it is full volume. I wondered why. Just sat in the mix better as more of a subtle/background element as opposed to the way I intended to use it. When it fades to full volume it is too piercing now that I think of it. Shaving the high end would of worked probably.

Personally, I think either screwing with envelopes or groove would work best for you. I would scratch buying anything for what you are trying to accomplish. However, I do suggest buying Soundtoys. They are amazing.
