Organic Sounds

First of all let me say, I love Sonic Academy. You guys tutorials kick a$$.

Now to my question; using any synth software such as Sylenth or Massive, how would I get a more organic sound to my synth. Bassnectar’s basslines and synths are the type of sounds I speak of. Most of his synth created sounds, if not all, have an undertone that almost suggests that the sound came from something living rather than just a machine. Am I making any sense? Probably not, but if you guys could assist, I’d greatly appreciate it.

you make sense dude. This can be done a few ways.

• Movement in your sound. Filter, Resonance, Phaser, Chorus, etc. Movement can help make things more natural.

• Layering. Layering real sounds on top of your synthesized sound can help your cause.

• Map to velocity. Do this for a couple reasons. First of all, having everything the same loudness is the first telltale sign of synthesized sounds. Chance up the velocity. Another thing you can do is to change the cutoff filter to velocity. A perfect example of this is when you play the piano, the harder you strike the keys, the brighter the sound becomes. You can do this many ways.

When you try to do this, think of acoustic sounds. Think of their properties and how they react to different ways of playing.
