Parallel compression

What is it and why do we need it? Correct me if I am wrong therenbsp;is anbsp;brief run through in the “How to make Electro 2013” but to be honest Inbsp;don’t fully grasp it or perhaps I am over complicating a simple way of routing or rerouting…? nbsp;

Watch the mastering course, it has a video on Parallel compression. Although I believe some peoples version of parallel compression is different to others.br

Parellel Compression is simply when you create a 2nd channel or version of a sound, and then blend in that second version with the original version. so you basically mix the two together.br
br
The reason it is used, is when you want to compress the living daylights out of something, but you also want to preserve the transient hits of, say a drum loop or synth sound etc, or you basically want to preserve the original, unprocessed sound a bit, but blend in a second version of the sound that is much more heavily processed, for example. br
br
If you just heavily compressed or processed the original version, it might be too extreme and ruin the original sound.br
br
By using things like parellel compression, you have much more control, as you can bleed in as much of the processed sound as you want, without ever affecting the original sound.

In terms of why it’s used, it can add much more impact and perceived volume to a drum or other loop, and it can also add more character and grit, as everything in the sound it being brought up in level i.e. any reverb, delay etc.

David great explanation cheers will watch that master class, was struggling with the plethora of long winded explanations I had found

personally I feel parallel compression is not covered enough. br
br
so many people ask how can get I my tracks to sound like the pros or how come theirs sound so big and mine sounds so flat. well guess what parallel compression can definitely help you achieve this as well as many other tricks.br
br
i would really look into parallel compression. it can make things sound bigger and fuller especially on drums and bass parts.br
br
naturally people teach PC in different ways so do a little research and see which one suits you. i use it now constantly and it does make a difference to your sounds if used properly;)br
