Pitching up a bass line

Does anyone have any idea how to do this in ableton not using the midi pitch?

I’m look something gradually move the bass line up in pitch if yopu know what I mean?

there is the Pitch in midi effect in the live devices which you can automate.

You can also change the notes inside the synth i mean like octaves and such.

Though i recommend the pitch bend from a controller . Offers more flexibility and you can correct mistakes in the envelopes.

That would be about it if i did understand your question right.

Edit: oh gradually pitching a bass , well the pitch in midi effects or just automate inside the synth the parameters.

If you use a sample synth like simpler , they have internal pitching buttons.

Are you reffering to the pitch in the midi effects? this will only allow me to do it in stages where as I’m looking for a smooth ascending sound. Do you know anything that will do this?

if i’ve understood you properly there’s a vid on youtube from dubspot called “making a dance music build” and he uses portomento to build it up gradually i dont have time to find the vid but if you just type that into youtube it should pop right up…

Is it audio or MIDI?

Did you try first?

Yes Howie I googled it and came up with zero thank you!

I’m using a VST so MIDI I guess…?

Will try and find this dubspot thing now cheers.

Howie, u must know how its done mate? Its used a lot in track over the years so cant be that hard

EDIT: The dubspot is interesting but dosent apply to VST’s so I’m still kinda stuck…

Portamento or glide?

Overlap the two notes slightly. Put legato on in your synth so that the envelope doesnt retrigger. you need to adjust it to taste a touch. There are multiple ways to do it though. Are you doing it for one note? Are you doing it for a whole section? You using Logic or Live? I dont recall. It also depends on how much you want to pitch up and the notes you are using.

I’m using the vanguard for the bass sound, its has glide but no portamento. The bass is being played on C3 & C2 and its over a 32 beat section, multiple notes are being played for rhythm as well as sidechain.

Heres an example of what I’m trying to do at 58 seconds for 32 beats, any more adivce you hav e mate?

Yeah, piece of cake. There are a couple ways to do this. I don’t have Vanguard so you are gonna have to find the controls. You can either draw in one note with the sustain all the way up and then automate the pitch of the oscillators. Your other option is portamento. It’s the same as glide, so youre kosher. Put it in legato mode. The notes will have to slightly overlap so the envelope doesn’t retrigger. You have your starting note and your ending note. Let’s say you want to go 8 bars. The first note holds for one bar and you want your slide up to start at bar two. So try putting your end note slightly overlapping the start note and drag it out till the end of the 8 bar phrase or whereever you want it to end. Now, you just have to adjust the glide time to get it smooth.

You see dude, I can help but you have to be a bit more specific. Remember

It’s called Portamento or glide. Either or.

Cheers mate, I’ll be giving this a go 1st thing tomorrow

I don’t know anything about vanguard but there IS a way to pitchbend basslines gradually in ableton. Don’t use the pitch plugin, what you do is in the piano roll go to the envelopes section and press the pitch bend button, you can draw a gradual curve up or just put 2 points and it’ll rise evenly over however long you want

thanks mate, I did try that but its not giving the desired effect, seems like the pitch will not go as high as I want it to.

Can’t you just add in a pitch envelope? All my dance music pitch risers are just pitch envelopes with really long attack times.

Depending on your synth, you can sometimes adjust the range, which then allows for higher pitch envelope manipulation in Ableton - like ‘PB Range’ in Analog (under the options in the Volume cell) or in Sylenth the ‘Bend Range’ option next to the pitch mod wheel.

In fact that inspired me to make this:

@BTD I thought that was really good, thanks for sharing

effectrix@!

Thanks for the video James

Dub, tried effectrix, is seems to chop up the notes (only way to explain it) so its no good

Yeah, James thanks for the vid. really useful. Been relying on sampled risers for too long. Need to do my own more often so that’ll help a lot.

Cheers

Agreed - be bashing that a little later
