Preparing for mastering question

Hey guys,

So I sent a track to a guy I know that is an engineer to get mastered and he said that I had a bit to much high end for a raw mixdown. So I am abit confused because I usually compared my spectrum eq after the mixdown to tracks like hardwell and W&W and my curves are usually pretty close, should I not be comparing against mastered tracks I’m getting the feeling like he wants the mixdown to be dull so he can bring up frequencies together but I always just thought if you could get the mix as close to the end result in the mixdown then that was a good thing?

Any feedback on this would be great.

i would always rely on your ears rather than a spectrum… when you A/B them with the other tracks do they sound similar?

Think that is spot on. But instead of using the spectrum analyzer you’d better use a few different sets of speakers; e.g. hifi set, car, headphones, the club.
