It depends on what you want to do, but if you want to keep it simple paint.net is good (and free). It is like an advanced version of MS Paint.

Lovely Ant - I use paint so much - you can do lots with it. Thanks a lot, just used it there, its like paint on steroids :cool:

If you want to make flyers it might be better to use desktop publishing. You can download an old version of Pageplus for free, you have to register your email though:

I used serif software years ago an it was really easy to use.
