It took me talking to my producer friend and comparing logic to ableton to figure that 1 out 
but after i realized that he wasnt dropping it -12dbs… why was I allowing ableton to do that to me?

I’m talking about kicks. I set the kick to 0 and everything else is below that.
Obviously if something is too loud, then bring the volume down.
I’m just saying start from 0 and then work your way down. IMO its easier to mix a track from full volume down to the exact volume that you really want for the track to be, than from starting lower then actual volume and then doing a mixdown. Phil & Bryan do something similar in their mixing vids in some of the tutorials when they bring all of the channels to down to nothing completely and then bring them up. I just do it the opposite. Write it up loud, mix it DOWN.
His post about not bringing the master channel down and using the faders makes perfect sense though. I usually don’t like to bring the master down and prefer to use the faders. But I also don’t use cheap freeware VSTs either, and I have a beast of PC, so my project never really bats an eye.
In my past projects I’ve done. I would have an OK kick at -12db but as soon as you have a layer of synths drop in (even if I took the volume down) it would completely drown out the kick and couldnt even hear it anymore unless you were on monitors.
Problem was fixed for me as soon as i brought it to 0.
