hi guys, im new to ableton and all music producing. what set-up would be classed as the full works to produce professional standard music using ableton? like what would be needed to have it all… vst’s etc???
to be fair ableton is more than capable of making a professional track with its built in tool’s.
if you want i will recommend some plug-ins that i won’t do with out now but that would just be my opinion and may not suit your needs
Ableton is more than good enough to produce professional music, many countless big name producers use it.
As for VSTs, Ableton’s in built ones are fantastic so you dont have to get extra ones, and the whole thing anyway really does come down to personal preferance. I’ve watched so many dvds of big producers in their studio using any number of different VSTs which they prefer. There isn’t really a right or wrong.
There are many main ones, even free ones that they have used, here are a small few:
Massive
Sylenth
Minimoog
Nexus
Trilogy
If you’re stuck though for which to get - if any - then as always we here at SA always recommend Sylenth, it’s not too expensive, not heavy on the CPU and delivers fantastic all round sound, plus it’s used a lot in SA’s tutorials.

This.
All you need is Ableton Live Suite and a computer. Everything else is extras. You dont need ANYTHING else to make professional sounding music.
yeah what do you recommend please jon?
well the plugs i won’t live with out now are
BBE Sonic Maximizer
D.cam Synthsquad
Sylenth1
Sonalksis SV-517 Eq
Uhbik
the rest i can do with out
are any of these free jon?
None are.
Oh yeah, get the Sound Toys Bundle. AMAZING!!!
DCAM is great too. Definately a plus. As is Sylenth…especially for learning purposes.
i would get one extra synth as the ableton built in synth section isn’t big enough (for me) to work with
dont get loads of stuff otherwise you wont know what to do with it! just one synth (sylenth, massive or albino will be good starters) and a nice set of drum samples
thanks guys for all the info. a feel more confident about how to come across this situation now… got a rough idea bout how im gona start. nice to know yous are there for help… wkd website this is!!!
George - for now the included mix tools in Ableton will serve you well if you use the tutorials to learn how to use them…concentrate on the actual music and track ideas…and sounds sources - so getting together sample packs within your genre:

http://www.loopmasters.com/
And get some good synths you like the sound of - demo them!
Bass: Spectrasonics Trillian
Softsynths: Sylenth, Waldorf Largo, Gladiator, DCAM Synth Squad etc…all depends on what type of music you are making.
The bare minimum of a set-up is:
The above plus:
Best Monitors you can afford
Best Soundcard/Interface you can afford
Controller keyboard
Once you cover that stuff - look at some good mix plugins like:
Cytomic Glue
PSP Oldtimer
Voxengo Crunchessor, Elephant
DMG eQuality
Soundtoys Native Bundle including Decapitator
Seriously after trying and using the bulk of expensive third party plugins including UAD and Powercore DSP cards - I can tell you if you know how to use them - the difference is not huge in quality compared to the amount of money you can spend…but the ones I mention above are great value and good.
I just wanted to share this video with you, before you spend £££££ on softs/gear

I don’t know what sort of music you in to, but the guy is frequently in charts so I guess his music is professional enough
I’m not suggesting that you should go with fruit loops, but as you can see something very basic can produce very good results.

well…the quality of his productions is pretty low…for the type of music he makes - its ok - but I dont think it is something to aspire to…

'quality' is something very subjective, but regardless, the point was to demonstrate that you can make dance music with limited resources and don't necessary need to spend loads of cash on plugs, even if your music is being commercially released.
