Hi. I’ve been having trouble getting my drums to sounds really groovin’. I’ve tried Logic’s swing quantization but I find them to sounds kind of stiff and robotic.
Here’s an example; a track I’m sure most know.
- YouTube
The hihats that come in @ 0:30 sounds like there have a bit of a swing to them. I loaded the mp3 into logic and it looks like the offbeat hihat is slightly pushed back. From what I’ve seen in Logic’s groove templates and some others is that the 2nd and 4th note are pulled back while the 1st and 3rd are left dead on. So after seeing this I’m really confused. Also when I tried to shift my off beat hihats back it just doesn’t sound right…
Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks
Maybe he explains it in depth in his Future Music In The Studio with episode?
Does sound a bit stiff to me though, but if you say only 1 and 3 are affected I think it’s more like a manual job then anything else.
He doesn’t explain anything in FM. Actually didn’t gain anything from watching it. Anyway, I’ve been noticing that a lot of house and progressive tracks have a lot of swing on the drums. I’m wondering how you guys achieve this sound. Are you using groove templates or are you moving the percussion around manually. Also if you apply swing to a song does it need to be applied to every track within the song. I could really use some pointers.
Thanks
Have you considered that in addition to applying a groove, they may be messing with velocities, which can also give a bit of a “swing” feel?
