i dont know what is going with some promoters nowadays . I got a gig in a Club where they usually Dj top 40s but they wanted to push the EDM . they signed the contract and the whole deal was ready to roll. but as soon as i recieved email from the Owner and Promoter for the club sending me a playlist and stuff. i was like WTF???
you got to be kidding me right ?
well i declined the offer even do they paid good.
kind of BS when they told me that i play too techno lol what a fags
it could turn into something better though, sometimes if you follow a clubs music policy it could help you in getting gigs playing what you like.
the question is are you willing to be that kind of dj? ive been in that situation myself. i was forced to play 80’s along with vocal house, not exactly what i wanted but it allowed to play somewhere else than my bedroom, and for awhile i was getting busier as a dj.

u are right Tommy following policies and trying to please people playing music that u dont even like is something that most new Djs do . but i am not in that stage anymore to be able to sell myself out . i did that long time ago .
I promised myself to no sell myself out since i want to create and promote my Music and my own sounds .
as long as i know there is 2 kinds of Djs .
those who believe in their Music and those who Believe in others people Music
I had good experiences before about it
and always end up bad. Trust me
the end was always about who play more Top 40s and that is not me . really felt bad about doing or listening those people. because at the end i was another Top 40s Dj even do i try to push my Music with it .
I had an opportunity in Devon to DJ in the commercial circuit. One of the top commercial DJs actually took a shine to my talent and asked me to DJ with him a few times, was actually a lot of fun, most of the time we played house and classic trance! However if i was willing to play RnB / Pop / Cheesy rock along with a small % of dance music and to talk on the mic doing birthday shout outs etc then I could have been in a very well paid position with regular work on the circuit.
At the time i turned it all down, it wasn’t my bag. But as i’ve got older i’ve realised it was a bad move, i could have been earning as much as one of the other guys I know down there on £1500 a week.
I’d do it now, i’d happily earn a good wedge for playing sh*t music, then spend my days working on music that I like. I wouldn’t DJ under my usual DJ name so it wouldn’t really come back to haunt me. It’s not selling out, it’s just weighing up the options; playing crap music to a bunch of drunk chavs / teens / students on a hefty pay check is MUCH better than working in an office / factory / etc from 9-5 for minimum wage to pay the bills.
If i got given the opportunity again i’d do it, defo.

I hear ya Roben . i have a day job and i get paid pretty decent doing easy work . so i guess it gives me the chance to be able to choose what to play
i used to do a retro/club classics event in my hometown it always did really well on the door and the bar would always be drunk dry the club got new management and theyasked me to start doing a weekly electro event alongside my monthly night till the club was refurbed six weeks later so me and another dj started doing this night every saturday and built up a good following and a the place rocked we were told that we would be kept on and our night would be the grand reopening anyway to cut a long story short in the two weeks the club was closed for refurb the owner decided to put all his trust in a new manager who was a total know it all and a cock he told me that i could still do my retro night but the playlist would be commercial classics such as two unlimited,doop,corona-rythm of the night (you get the idea lol) also our electro night would be replaced with a comercial dance/chart night and a rock night i declined his offer to stay on and he then tried ripping off and keeping the name of my night which i managed to stop luckily anyway i warned him that the changes in music policy etc would kill the club and it closed five weeks after opening and it served them right
roben i can see where your coming from a got offered a job doing chart and all that shizzle around 1995 and turned it down looking back to then i never had money for vimyl which was a major stumbling block for me if i’d of took the job i’d of had more money to spend on tunes etc but i could not play anything i dont actually like thats just not for me…

exactly that what happened to me too. Some other Djs who loves to Djs Top 40s will always try to steal your night and i am sure after the owners listen to him spinning and the meatheads start cheering . u know that u will be fired.
nothing wrong for those Djs but I agree that is one of the reasons that i told that Promoter to **** off. heeheh
by top 40 do you mean billboard or just more commercially successful dance music?if its the latter, you should have taken the spot.you can always take their suggestions and sneak whatever you want into the mix as you read the floor.if successful with this, by the third time you play there you can toss their list and they wont bat an eye.
tell ye what
earnin enough to live on by playin **** music
is that worse somehow than earnin enough to live on workin in a s**t job?
doubt it somehow
if you can get paid a wedge to play someones cds at their birthday…go for it

I think you both missed the point though. Unless you’re in a full time job that you love, then what’s the difference from sitting at your job donig whatever it is that you do, being bored as sht being paid crap money for doing crap work, or getting paid good money for playing crap tunes for less hours?
I’d go for the good money for less hours playing crap music over a shtty day in the office any day.
