I have a quick question about using scales. My first question is that am I able to use the same scale in a different octave on a melody. I mean Im sure nothing can stop me haha but will it musicaly correct? Im pretty sure I can right? My other question is can I use different scales if they are in the same key? An example is using an Aminor for chords and bassline but use a Aminor Melodic scale for the lead and melody parts?

yes and yes for both questions. the scale runs the whole length of the keyboard.

im sure you see the connection there
Haha thanks well I have book on music theory but It never said flat out that I could do that. So, pretty much as long as they are in the same key with major and minor then its ok? So, is the harmonic scale for chords?

yes.
HS isnt just for chords. you can use that too. try the pentatonic too, thaqts a gooden. its the scale hendrix clapton and all the rock guitarists use for their solos. slash etc etc. its the “rock scale”. can use the blues scale too which is just the pentatonic scale with the additional “blue” note (b5)
Wow, thanks for all the help. Once I get off work I will be sure to mess around with some. For the longest time I have just been using one type of scale for everything :hehe:
no probs. i find theory fascinating. i used to read soooo many books and info about theory. i loved it. couldnt get enough.
but as ive said in another thread, its not what i rely on now as ive learnt from using it, that i usually come up with better sounding music now that i tried to avoid using it. i say AVOID using it, instead of NOT using it… lol meaing, i use it obviously, but i try not CONSCIOUSLY use it. as you tend to come up with alot more interesting things when you “dont know” what youre doing.
just think of all the great songs youve heard over the years that use just 2 chords all the way throught he track… theres thousands.
thru lots of experimenting i also come to the conclusion that its best not to start messing with the scales by using chromatic notes (chainging the notes within a scale) when writing cos it just doesnt flow as nice as it should feel it should. (im talking about electronic/pop music). in guitar/piano based music it sounds real nice, very sophisticated. ermmm like beatles coldplay radiohead type of arrangements. in synth/disco music… na, not for me.
