Hey Phil, I am pretty much at the mix down stage of my first track and I have been reading alot about mix downs and watched the videos available on SA.
My question is I have noticed alot of people talk about rolling off the really low frequencies on kicks and sub bass some say 20hz and some say 40hz so I was wondering what you think is best, and also If you would use a low pass filter at for example 20hz or would you roll it off with an eq, I realise its doing pretty much the same thing but filters always seem to do a better job of cutting low frequencies I think.
Anyway thanks for any help your able to give
If you are rolling off the whole mix i usually do it at 30Hz… you need to use something with a steep curve… waves stuff has 48db low cut filters.
Its also a good idea to go through your mix and roll off any unwanted freqs
Waves linear lowband eq is amazing for cutting the lows. The Q curve can literally cut it in a vertical line
ok thanks Phil I already have everything else cutting unwanted frequencies was just abit unsure when it came to the kick and sub bass, I don’t have the waves stuff the only vst filter I have is fabfilter volcano 2 seems to work alot better then abeltons
Thanks for your help guys
Also dont just do something cos u think its the ‘right’ thing to do. For example add a filter and bypass it to see what its actually doing, is it even needed etc.
I mean i know like 30hz and below is like unwanted energy etc i just find sometimes cutting out lows on an overall mix can sometimes really take away from a nice thick edge. Also as Phil said you should be removing unwanted frequencies channel by channel so your mixdown shouldnt really have a lot of action below 30hz.
Thanks jjdejong I will keep that in mind its more just for the sub bass and the kick everything else is already cut where it needs to be
