Recording External Gear

Hey guys, I just wanted to get the opinions of people who have and have used external hardware in their setups and productions.

When running the signal into your DAW, do you suggest sampling the instruments audio, or if you have MIDI on it, continuously running it with the MIDI?

If you sample the signal, do you sample it dry and add internal effects, or do you sample it with the effects already wet from the hardware synth?

I’m curious to anyones workflow.

depends on what you want to do? personally when i had hardware i just use to leave it running through the midi and use logic’s effects depending on the built in effects that come with the synth. of course the only problem with doing that is unless you write down all the settings of the synth i used to have to stick with the same project until i had finished it.

another thing would be for instance if you made a bassline and you know you are not going to edit it much, bounce it down to audio so you can use the synth for other things.

i used to leave my hardware running from the midi but now i record the sound from a synth and play it in simpler. then when its edited its saved. no worries

i still run my 303 live from midi clock and use effects on it in ableton

i love ableton
