Trying to open up a discussion about recording real instruments in ableton...
Hoping that there are others around that have done this as well. Maby Phil will answer? :D
I'm using a saffire pro 24 DSP as my interface and I have a PRS Custom 24 and a Warwick 5 String Bass. I have been practicing recording into ableton, and I get the sounds recorded just fine.
The problem that I am having is that when I record something like "slap bass" and then I try to include that into arrangement/loop that I have programmed with synths... It kinda sounds out of tune.
Now obviously, my first thought is check the guitar. The bass is def in tune. I have a tuner and it sounds right to me. But after thinking about it... even the slightest detune on one of the strings will cause the whole thing to sound out of wack compared to an exact semitone of a VST.... Its pissin me off, cause I want to use my own samples but obviously it needs to be in Key! i know im not the first guy to do this.
So I have melodyne & antares... I'm thinking I should probably go and re-record the bass samples and then do a pitch correction to make it perfect with melodyne. OR just record the bass samples using antares on the audio FX chain. Anybody ever do this?
Anybody have any success stories about recording guitar or bass in ableton that they could share! I'm always interesting in hearing others ideas on the topic!
thanks!
UV - I don’t know anything about this, so if I am way off the mark sorry. I find this surprising, analogue synths and guitars have been used in tracks together before melodyne was possible.
Could it be that the syth patch is using more than one osc and the other osc are playing notes that are out of key?

Yah I thought the same thing as well. lol, I know im not doing something others havnt…
The notes are def not out of key though. That much I know.
will check 1 of the patches to check the detune on the B oscillator page. good idea.
The other synth I am using is just a piano and its not detuned…
The bass is close to being in tune, but its not perfect. Going to try again tonight…
I agree with ya that while melodyne was not available … i still think i might wanna use it now-a-days because a little pitch correction never hurt!

Can you tune the bass guitar to the synth?

shouldnt have to tune the guitar to the synth. standard tuning B E A D G should work fine.
Is there a chance you might be able to post a snippit of this so we can actually hear what’s happening? I have always had trouble tuning the bass, whether it was live or soft-synth. There’s just something about processing that makes it harder to deal with, I think.
I don’t think I can offer much help, but I want to experience the problem. Is that possible, UV?

ahhhhhhh i think i figured it out. had to do with the piano being on the same octave as the bass.
also I did go and re-record the bass again this time I used autotune when recording.
It sounded the same at first. Once I moved the piano midi up an octave… things sounded better.
think it might have had to do with the fact that the 2 instruments were sitting in the same space.
Jamie, I would post this clip… cause im kinda excited about this track. but im a little wary of doing that for this one. Somebody could easily lift this melody cause its the most simple thing i’ve ever done. but its also super catchy…
now just gotta electrofy it.
Oops! Sorry, I forget that intellectual property is precious!

HaHa - to experince UV’s many problems would be a fulltime job
Sorry could not resist ---- I’ll go now
