Hey everyone, for those that have been here a while, know that in August, I had my new iMac and Macbook stolen, along with a bunch of other things. Since that time, I have gotten a new MacBook Pro and have look around at apps that will help in case of a stolen laptop. Everything just ends up being so expensive, so I kinda stopped looking… until today.
I was reading a Mac blog website and they gave a review of a new app, similar to LoJack. The best thing about it is that it only costs $20 for the life of the laptop. On top of that, they are giving $10 off to readers of the blog (Code TUAW50 at checkout). Not too shabby if you ask me. The program is completely hidden. No prefs pane, no app icon. Nothing. When you have your Mac stolen, you just go to the website and change your status from not stolen to stolen and it updates your ip address, takes pics of the perps, and pinpoints where they are via google maps, so you can take a trip to the ghetto with your kevlar vest on and confront them yourself. You can read the review at the link below.

Hope this helps with those that have a Mac.
kevlar vest !!! you big girl
Basically, steal a Mac in this day and age and you’re screwed
Wow - this is excellent Howie, thanks! I’m definitely getting this…
thats cool…it sucks when people take things that are important to you. 1 year and a half ago i had my own auto detailing business and one night someone broke into my van and stole 3500 dollars of equipment. insurance wouldnt cover it and my business (and me)went bankrupt.it was pretty devastating.
I know how you feel. In August I had $12,000 worth of gear and personal belongings stolen from me in a burglary. They kicked in my front door in broad daylight.
I feel your pain dudes !
Im lucky that theres still some really nice people in the world though! .
that really sucks howie…thats a hell a lot of stuff to loose…hopefully stuff like that wont happen to any of us again:)
F*ck tommy that’s aweful man, for your livelyhood to go under because of it!!
Why wouldn’t your insurance pay it? You obviously were with the wrong people.

this happened to me too, its the worst thing ever. they don’t realize that if the insurance doesn’t cover it, its gonna cost you more that just the money to replace the tools & if you can’t replace them, end up going under that small robbery has cost you 3500 plus x amount per year for the rest of your working life.
the worst part with this sorta thing is that the guys robbing you actually think that they are not gonna do any damage because ALL work men have Huge insurances.
In my burglary case, they only covered 60% of what got stolen. Bastards…
yeah it was probably one of the worst experiences in my life, it ruined me, i had just quite my job i had for 9 years to start my business and sunk all my money into getting a van and the equipment and spending 2000 dollars on training, i bet everything and after that happened i couldnt operate the business anymore. what pissed me of also is the people that stole the stuff had to of known that it was for someones work. you gotta be pretty low, basically taking ones livelihood , what if i had a family to feed? i can honestly say i hope those people get whats coming to them one day cause i have no sympathy for scum like that
btw… prey can be removed. that is one of the major downfalls. however, hidden can not. there is not even anything in the preferences pane. If you have a mac, make sure to set it so that you have to enter a password every time you update, install new software, or reformat your hard drive. this will prevent the thieves from wiping out your hard drive.
well prey is free for mac and pc, so you get abit for what you pay for. and most thieves probably wont be smart enough to be looking around for these kind of software though. and it is alot harder to remove on a mac
That horrible what happened to you man I’m really sorry to hear that. That susyem sounds cool but do you think its a good idea to confront them yourself or does the company say contact the police? I see that leading to someone maybe ending up dead or confronting the wrong person.
You contact the police and use the info you get to assist in retrieving your equipment. It takes pictures of them, says where they are on a map with latitude and longitude using google maps, gives you the information from the ISP on where they are, and lastly it tells you what they are looking at.
