Sample Packs - Whats everyone using?

Ah I know… But Drum Tools is pretty crisp & deep.

Its hard to know what reviews are sometimes trying to achieve sometimes with all the ads etc… by the companies in the Mag itself. Double advertising :hehe:

Rarely you see something - anything that isnt 8/10 - unless they are a small company.

i think sound on sound is very on point, they give gold baby 9/10 reviews and he is just one guy in new zealand

computer music / future music is very much victim to the pr of the companies as they provide nearly all their content and like you say advertising revenue

i got a vengeance house cd and a loopmasters elektro house cd, but tbh i dont think ive ever used the loopmasters one. i dont think its that great and was abit pi$$ed off at how little you get for your money compared to the vengeance disc. thats it, only got the “2”, one really… lol

i only use singhle hits, dont use the loops.

I like the Vengeance library because they have an analog warmth to them similar to sampling from vinyl but without being overly processed and dripping with FX like some of the other sample providers out there.

The only problem is, as someone else mentioned on this thread, that they have become kind of industry standard and used in tons of releases so specifically the loops are becoming extremely familiar.  I stay away from using loops as is and stick to programming my own grooves with the drum hits or I’ll cut up a hit from various loops to make my own kit.

I checked out the Deadmau5 XFR but they suspiciously sound like the Vengeance ones to my ears.

My Fav Sample Sets are

Ultimate Beats Vol. 2 (second best single hits)

Ultimate Beats Vol. 1 (best single hits around)

Audio Boutique - Tribal Elements (great tribal loops and single hits)

Secret House by Kolombo (Great for nice techy loops but no single hits)

Progressive House and Future Tech (quality loops ok single hits, great kicks)

Riley And Durrant - Progressive House Producer Vol 1 & 2 (ok all rounder but has something for every project)

i have grown to hate the vengeance loops, they have huge amounts on them but i can flick through the 400+ loops in the collection and feel like i’ve heard nothing original.

I know its all about what you do with them…

But a lot of those V loops (call them that from now on… ) sound a bit dated to me.

So many of those loops can sound like they belong on a Techno record from 2000.

Which is where they’re probably from

Lets bombard them with Emails & let them know :hehe:

The Big Fish Audio ethnic stuff is some of the best I’ve heard. Expensive, though.

Makes me think though… How many of these 1000’s of samples in your library do you actually use.

Theres some amount of filler. How little could you survive with?

I remember talking to someone who had the same Drumkit saved into his Template in Logic. They were just 5 or 6 samples that he knew worked really well together. A Kick, Snare, Clap, couple of Hats etc… Nothing too fancy… just the core elements.

Key for him was that he didnt have to spend ages looking for sounds / checking Freq’s etc… and could just get on with his ideas.

Really speeded things up for him… and as he said, he could always go back & change whatever at a later stage.

Suppose it depends on how you work or get your inspiration… either from a Musical phrase or from the foundation up - but it still makes sense whatever way you look @ it.

I notice that I always pretty much end up with the same clap or hats etc…

Thats why the classic sound of 808 / 909 just works, cos the Guys in Roland designed the sounds to work in the box. Sometimes there’s too much choice.

Have to say… I ripped a few bits & pieces out of stuff I got on Beatport… Both WAV’s & 320’s… Used a few here & there, but there just seemed to be something You Tube-y about them. Possibly not the best source from my exp.

Still have my Decks / Mixer & 100’s of Records & have meant to do a bit of real sampling… but it seems like a real chore when theres some pretty Phat Kicks on my HD already.

Nothing at all against sampling Man - just my comparison of it so far.

Would you mind me asking what are you sampling & how etc…?

I dont think anyone mentioned yet (didnt care to read through everything yet), but they sound amazing! Goldbaby makes some amazing sample packs. Its nothing you can rip off. But if you want multisamples of some amazing synths, you should check it out. Cant afford a SH-101 or Moog Modular? Goldbaby BABY!
