Sample selection/processing

Hi everyone

I was thinking it might be good to see a tutorial on creating a track using samples from a sample cd such as Sample Magic/Vengeance showing how and why particular samples are selected as well as all of the the processing that is involved along the way and why it is used. Things like compression on drums, eq, reverb and getting the bass to sit with the kick (I know you can use sidechaining but this isn’t always effective)

I always go through the sample cds and find that they just don’t sound good enough… Is there something the professionals do differently to get that shiny/polished sound? I know that a lot of it is mastering but not what and why effects are used along the way.

PS I have just posted a links to a couple of tunes I’m working on into the tracks/mixes section (I will put more on soon) and it would be good to hear some feedback from you guys on what is wrong/right with it. If anyone can give some advice that would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Matt

Hey Matt,

I don’t know if you are a subscriber or not, but if you are you would see how samples are handled in the tutorials. Depending on whether its a drum loop or a sample or a one-shot, you might handle all of these different. Take a loop, slice it to midi, or chop it up to create a different arrangement. If you are using one shots and you arent getting the sound you want, start stacking sounds on top of one another till you get what you are after. Its all about playing around and getting different results. Thats how you learn.
