I use the same kick most of the time. I add eq and compression each time. What I would like to do is just sample to the eqed and compressed kick where I no longer have to do those steps. Will this work or is it better to keep eqing and compressing?
Thanks for the help.
I’d say almost definitley it’s better to always compresss and EQ seperatley as you never quite know how well it will sit in your mix. You may need to asjust the parameters slightly so it sounds better in relation to your other instruments.
Thank you man
would like to add that the kick may need to be eq’d differently track to track.
also with compression once its be applied to an audio file it can’t be removed, so doing the compression track to track is probably a better way of working as well.
one other thing is do you use sample cd’s to get your kicks from or cd’s and vinyl?
i only ask as most people use the vengeance samples pack and they are all pre compressed and pre eq’d kicks and shouldn’t need to much work, just find the kick you like form the cd dag it into the daw drop the channel volume to either -12 or -3 and away you go. most if not all of the vengeance kicks should take very little working with and if they do then its probably a good sign its the wrong sounding kick for the track.
I think my new favorite kick is the kick from the fidget video. This is the one I’m eqing and compressing.
I do use the vengeance samples as well. Your the third person who has told me to just use them as they are. Thank you for your advice, I really do appreciate anyone that helps.

I’m gonna play devil’s advocate here and point out a bit of a contradiction between two sections of your post. In the first you recommend that the OP not print his eq/comp so that he can tailor it from track to track. Then in your next section you highlight that a highly respected sample producer puts out their samples with the eq/comp printed to the sample. If an outfit like Vengeance do it, then why shouldn’t the OP?
My personal opinion to the OP - eq your kick sample in isolation, but don’t compress it. Good surgical eq on the kick should translate from track to track - if you kick sounds flabby on one track, it’s very likely to do so on the next. Compression however is more likely to be mix dependent than eq, and IMO should be left until the track is more fully formed.
because he is talking about using a single kick for every project, vengeance have 300+ kicks to a pack so its easy to find one that fits with no need to compress or eq. if the guy asking the question compressed and eq’d his single kick then it may not work with the next track he made and the processes that he has used cannot be removed.
I agree with Jon, a lot of kicks you’ll find have already had the hard work put into them. I always use a kick from either deadmau5 or funkagenda kick packs. Sometimes i may EQ a little but apart from that, not a lot of work needs putting in.

Fair enough. Like I said I was playing devil’s advocate - not professing to be an expert and someone’s got to ask questions
PS Sorry to come back to this now - was on holiday there for a while.
