Sampling movie quotes

Ok so there are loads of tracks which do it, but what is the legality behind doing this?

Also can anyone list some tracks that sample movie quotes please, especially during a breakdown. I want to listen to various tracks to get ideas about their layering.

Thanks

Yes it is illegal but I doubt they would track you down for it. If your track got commercial success though then you would have to look at changing it or buying the rights.

There was a popular song recently with the sample from the movie saw but I cant find it.

Just search for songs with pulp fiction quotes, there will be hundreds!

The Autobots - Apocalypse samples batman, in a very very good way

Jon, can you remember any hard house tunes that had movie samples in?

So far iv’e got:

Music is the Drug - Lee Haslem. Samples 51st State

Here comes the Pain - Lee Haslem. Samples Carlito’s Way

Beautifull - Paul Glazby. Samples Event Horrzon

Bass Graffiti - The Hulk.

Ian M - Crazy Pills. Samples Zoolander

I know there were alot of samples and lines used from Pulp Fiction. But hey, if you have to get around it, record it yourself. Correct me if I’m wrong, but its not copyright infringement if you record the line word for word yourself, right? Besides, it would be pretty cool if you put mutator on that thing too.

there was one called hallucination (i think) the sample was taken from fight club " you’re a voice in my head, you’re a f@&kin hallucination"

another one was the sample taken from ghost the track was called reactor i think.

the intro from Halloween has been used loads.

i think most of the tidy trax have used some kind of movie sample in them.

the abyss has been sampled thousands of times.

andy whitby and alex calver (WTF) sampled blair witch project

to be fair about 75% of the hard house tracks taken from 92 and 2002

hey roben sorry to jack your post but i went searching for hardhouse tracks and had to post this for anyone who loved it back then (still puts the hairs up on the back of my neck)

omg Revolution! Still gets me going that tune, love it!

Takes me back to my hard house days, id actually love to do a big hard house night again just for old times sake, i used to be the biggest tidy fan you’d ever meet. Been to 13 weekenders haha.

wow k90 seen him loads of times and he is fookin class

Legend! Cheers for the link

you’re wrong bud!!! even 1 second is copy write theft. i’ve read what your are saying on many forums and its a myth! any amount of sampling, for any amount of time, with out permission is copy write theft and is prosecutable to the full extent of the law. it doesn’t matter if you sell one copy or 3000 if the owner of the sample wants to have you for it they will.

i’ve heard people say that you are aloud to sell 500 copys of a track before you need sample clearance, that’s also very wrong

Hi Roben

No probs on the link.

I’ll go with Jon on the main subject.

It’s most likely no secret that artists, including certain big names don’t bother clearing samples for productions.

Granted, I guess they feel the original copyright owners don’t really go out of they’re way to browse through hundreds of thousands of club-orientated tracks in digital stores looking for breaches of copyright, but at the end of the dayit is illegal.

If the original copyright owner comes across your track, (most likely by accident somehow), and takes you up for breach of copyright the penalty and fine will be a lot more then you could make with the sale of 500 copies.

Would selling 500 digital copies (say £500 worth) worth the risk of a say, a £50,000 fine?

The chances of getting caught out could be slim, especially with non-mainstream music productions but it would really be up to the artist if they want to take the risk.

I would just record the vocal yourself or whatever. After effects, who would really know the difference?

Do you still go to Tidy events, or have you moved on from the scene altogether?

You should check out the remixes of Revolution by Emilio and Adrenaline Dept as there was a recent remix comp for this track on Trackitdown. How these two versions didn’t win is beyond me. Can’t beat the original but these came really close.

No not really, i got bored as there is/was only a handfull of hard house producers so all the tracks became too stale and predictable and inevitably boredom kicked in.

I found with House there was a lot more variation, but don’t get me wrong, i do still love hard house at times, but only because i may only listen to it once in a year.
