Really good tutorial and the template is very helpful!
But I have some questions:
- What are modes exactly? are they like a variation of a key?
for example: If im writing a song in C, can i say the song is in C Dorian?
- How do I build Chords in modes? If a major triad is = root + 4st +3st. How would it be in a mode?
Thanks
Modes are just variations of our more common major and minor scales. In fact, if you remember from the videos, both the major and minor scales are modes themselves, named Ionian and Aeolian, respectively.
If you wanted to write a tune in a specific mode, starting from the major scale and then altering whatever scale degrees are necessary for that particular “color” or “sound” of the scale you are looking for is the best method to follow; Until, of course, you get so used to scale patterns that you don’t need to look at the charts much.
Chords in modes are built in the same manner as they would be in the major or minor scale, but I might briefly say that in general, chords in the major or minor key are going to sound much better against scales that are modal than if you try to build actual chords from the mode itself. Keeping the harmonies more major and minor based is going to be much more pleasing and “regular” to your listener’s ear than if you try to make the harmonies complex. Let your melody be the complex part…

Thank you Jamie, I think I understand that part.
I also found a good site that explains it very well.

My next question would be:
Can I write a song in just a mode?
If i write a song in a particular key signature, (lets say Eb Major) how can i use modes? or what modes can I use?
I found in a site they mention this song:
All Along the Watchtower – Jimi Hendrix – played in C Aeolian (Eb Major key signature)
how that works?
Thanks
