anyone use these to mix on? my new room (recently moved) is a toppy end early reflection ightmare… gonna have to use headphones to produce i think. cant really have the monitors up loud anyway cos of the neighbours. any recommendations for mixing headphones?
AKG K 240 MkII - Excellent, neutral sound, and really comfortable to wear for longer periods.
I have the Sennheiser HD280 and HD380 Pro as well, but I think they are much less comfortable to wear, and they don’t sound as good. Besides, I don’t like using closed cans for producing.
I think the 595, 600 or 650 are better options if you wanna stick with Sennheiser.
ye ive heard the 600 and 650’s are gd. dunno how they differ much tho, anyone…? friend has the 280’s, says theyre quite bass heavy
I would definitely have a good look at the HD 600’s and the 650’s. They are very popular cans for pros and audiophiles around the world.
I recently A/B’d both.
The 650’s were noticeably brighter & crisper. The 600’s were more enjoyable to listen to but as I wanted these for hearing the details in my mixes, and liking my mixes to be on the warm side I opted for the 650’s.
Take your favorite songs into a showroom that has both and test them out.
If you are going to get a good pair of headphones like these then a good amp will make these headphones perform to the best of their abilities.
I haven’t tried the Sennheisers, but I have the ATH-M50’s and they’re fantastic. A couple people on the board agree (I remember some people backing it in another headphone thread) and it’s got near perfect reviews on amazon if that means anything to you.

I have Sennheiser HD280s–they’re fine. They have a good neutral bass but are limited in high end freq. response (8-25k) compared to other studio headphones. I notice I miss out on some overtones, and personally I like cans with more room for harmonics in the (5-30k) range like Sony’s MDR-V700DJ. But I’d do a sound check and see if you notice any difference.
That said, I notice things that sound ideal in headphones don’t have as much detail playing them through external monitors. When I laptop mix remotely with cans I always do a reality check later with my KRKs.
I own the HD 280’s and have to agree that they are a little bass heavy. I always notice that after I mix with them (during the night) and then go back to listen to the song on my monitors the next day that I have to redo the mix. I love the way they sound for just listening to music, but would probably think the 600’s are much better.
I have the akg 240s, very light and comfortable, you will forget you’re wearing them!
Also use the mdr700s as well, there are actually pretty hood considering there dj headphones
