Hi guys,
Is it at all possible to seperate out a MIDI clip in ableton into its indvidual hits on different tracks, like you can in Cubase or Logic? If so how do you do it?
Thanks
DeathHands
like part dissolve ? no not that im aware of but it can be done
the traditional way…
copy the midi clip data to another midi track (source)… On the receiving track setup so this track listens to the source track (configure your input accordingly i.e. in from source) & hit monitor to on.
So if you have a midi drum clip with kic snare hat & you want to treat these as separate
clips… follow the above procedure …
Or if your starting from fresh with a drum rack… Create these separate (source) midi tracks as you need them & send/forward them to the drum rack (receiver) …
Create a midi clip and drag a sample into the bottom of the screen where it says drag instruments / effects etc… live creates a simpler automatically for you !!
Yeah,ok guess I’ll have to do it by routing then. Cheers, just wanted to make sure I hadn’t missed a trick. It was a pretty clear indication when there was nothing in the help files. Egg I’m not sure what question you were answering mate but it wasn’t the same one I asked sorry fella.
Ok tried the routing method you described and it does work. I have all the seperate parts of the drums on different MIDI channels all routed to the drum source. However when I drop an audio effect say eq or whatever onto the seprate parts it automatically re routes the channel as audio to the master bypassing the drum source, so makes it kinda defeat the point I was after.
egg was suggesting a super fast way Ableton allows you to construct kits, like he said create a midi track first, then browse for say a kic from the browser drop into the detail view… now its not a midi track any more, its an instruments track (a midi & audio track).
After compiling your kit using this method you would then select all drum tracks & command G to group them.
Back to our story, if you have created a drum rack (receiver) (instrument track) you should see it is grouped. A little arrow on the tracks header opens the rack to reveal your audio channels, now you can process them with fx individually.
I’m not using individual samples though, so eggs method wont do what I want + I know that already, sorry if I seemed off had a long day.
I am using DKFH superior 2.0 for a live kit sound, but I do not want to use the onboard effects that come with it. I want to use the Ableton ones to treat each individual kit sound and then the group. So on reading back a few times the method you describe using the instrument rack I’m not sure that will work either. Ah well it looks to me a bit like it’s just not a host designed to deal with what I’m doing too well. I think easiest way is to just use what comes with Superior.
Ahhhhhhh. lolz
I had not realised at all I could drop superior into an instrument rack. Sorry I’m a dummy.
I had been dragging the kit into the window in the empty space and assuming that was all I could do duuuhhhh. Right now I can do what I want, thanks for putting up with me.
No wait that doesnt work either. Perhaps I’m not such a dummy ?? :w00t:
Using a drum track means i have to load an instance of DKFH onto each box where the hit is. ie kick snare hats etc which is not particualrly friendly to my computer.
What I want to do is use 1 instance of Superior with many seperate midi clips for each hit. I then want to be able to treat each hit individually.
ok well open a new audio track & configure its in & out to listen to the drum machine remember to put monitor to on… on this audio track you should see the option to select this drum machine as source & then under this tap the option to select the sound/output i.e. kic, snare , hat etc…
Now you should be able to setup your audio tracks using this method…
All drum machines allow for multiple outs, you just need to connect them using Abletons track routing system…
hope this helps, sorry am not familiar with the drum machine you mentioned but My illustrations above should work …
I might be wrong here but if I open an audio track and set up as you described surely I will then not have the MIDI data required to trigger the drum machine ie Superior? I think the long and short of it is that it ain’t possible in Ableton.
Wrong m8 , a little bit of imagination goes a long way !!!
sorry if it sounds short (just had a long day !!)
Audio
your drum module will have outputs & Ableton can see these !! you need to create an audio track & using the tracks input selector, select your drum machine as source & directly under this input selector you can select output i.e kick snare hat etc…(select monitor to on).
Midi
pls refer to few posts back… keep at it , you’ll get it
Ok…
I figured out the problem. Superior drummer required internal routing to work in the configuration you described.
Got there in the end lol
Cheers
