Sermon - deep tech

Hey everyone,

I was working on this for a few nights, looking for something to complete it when I thought of many fine records that use some preacher giving a sermon (think of green velvet’s very first release or cj bolland’s the prophet), so I thought I might give it a try.

I should point out that the views expressed are not exactly those of my own :stuck_out_tongue: , but I hope it suits the track.

So any ideas on the mixdown, eq, arrangment,… any feedback is much appreciated

cheers!

Nico

Like:

-Cool groove

-I think with some (and maybe some more) polish, the idea could shine.

Don’t like:

-I think it needs some kind of mid perc.

-A more defined hook wouldn’t hurt either.

-Needs a sub. Make a bass channel, hp filter it till 150-200Hz and use that as your main bass, then make another channel, add a low passed sine wave with some distortion/saturation/or not with the same midi as your bass channel.

-Add some fills and some kind of variations (loaaaaaaaads of options, which is good and bad at the same time).

-Vox needs to fit better into the mix, try playing with eq, saturation, distortion, reverb, etc…

The important thing is that you have a nice idea going on, danceable to say the least, the technical aspects come with the practice, you’ll learn them eventually.

How long have you been producing? Keep it up! :hehe::cool:

Can’t really tell whether it needs a sub. Seems fine for me concerning the bottom end.

Agree with a few more fills. Especially after every 8 or 16 bars.

And I’m not so into 2 big minute like breaks in one track. Would consider making the first half as long.

But for the rest I really think this is quite a good song. Has definitely some release potential.

I taught the bass was fine, my speakers are slightly bass heavy tho,

Its a little hard to hear the vocal apart from the drop down.

An extra something in the mid range would add more energy i think, bongos, synth, shakers

But all in all, i liked it and i would play it out, although I would mix out straight after the drop down with the vocal as it doesn’t go anywhere after that.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the feedback!  As always the problem is that listening to it over and over again makes me sort of numb for the shortcomings it has.  The past few days of festivities took me out of that, and now reading your comments and hearing it again now points the flaws. Totally agree on the mid-rythm section, and the break (and the track as a whole) being far to long now.

About adding stuff like fills, I’m always kind of wary about that because of the risk of ‘overloading’ it.  Once I start adding them I find it hard to stop, but I’ll try and go gentil

@djzmo: I’v been dj-ing for about 16 or 17 years, but recent “developments” in the bussiness have made it difficult to keep doing my own thing and compete with the youngsters. So I started fooling around with ableton intro the past two years, but things got more serious past summer when I upgraded and, more important, bought some decent monitors…  everyday comes with new discoveries

Thanks all for the ideas and advice!

Yeah, plug away at it dude, you’re definitely on to something.

Best of luck with it.
