Should Sonic Academy start doing a bi monthly production competition?

Should SA start doing a bi monthly/monthly production competition?

By this I mean every month/other month we a comp but on one genre so one being dub step, one month being hard house, dnb, trance, house and so one!

The reason why I say one genre is that if you look at all the different styles in the world cup comp the lesser liked genres don’t get a fair run on things where with it means a level playing field and the chance to try and do something new and maybe learn something that could help people in there chosen genre.

I think if SA were to do this then we should have the first few genres put up well in advance so that people have chance to get to work and not have to rush. Also I think it should be run like the world cup one where you have a group stage then go onto face each other head to head knock out style.

I also think it would be good for the site as it could bring new members to the site if they were able to get a few good little prizes.

What do you think guys, would you be up for something like this?

That sounds like a good idea, not sure if it’s something i would enter. but on the other hand will open other people on here up to genres they aren’t aware of or haven’t produced before.

Some people may see it as a distraction if they enter and are kinda pushed towards making something they aren’t keen on, but in hindsight could learn new tips and production values along the way!

It could follow the genre of the tutorials?

Like a final project to put the new swills into practise.

So say the next one was Progressive house, have the comp in that genre.

All that said not so sure on music being competitive in some ways!

Its a decent idea in theory, but if I’m being totally honest its not something that I could see myself entering regularly, especially for genres that I don’t particulary like/get.

Sure, I understand the argument about learning new techniques from production of other genres but you can learn these from the tutorials and just take what you need from them.  Can’t see many people having the motivation to make a full track in a style that doesn’t particularly inspire them.

+1

im gonna give this a big thumbs up.

it would be cool to force people out of their shells and expand their skills through producing other genres that that dont normally tackle or have never done before.

Nice idea. It might help get people to step away from their comfortzones, although if it’s a style they know nothing about or actually don’t like, I reckon the incentive to try would be hard to pull thru. I’m up for anything once, and if I don’t like it, it’s the trying new things that counts, and who knows what you can learn when ur away from “safety”.

I think there are plenty of other competitions that you can practice what you learned on this site. This is, first and formost, an educational website.

it could be tied into the “fix the mix” thing

at least people would be graded on thier production techniques and not style

i don’t feel that the comp has been judged badly, and there have been a few that despite not being house are still winning.

i think the world cup comp has been great. it has brought a lot of friendly competition and made people get more involved in the forums. its good to be able to post a track your proud of and be sure that people are gonna take honest listen to it. i only see this as a good thing if it happens in the future

Yes - I agree. I think the SA competition has been run really well - good work! I’ve just been knocked out, but not because my track was not house (although I have to admit a little fatigue hit when I heard the old 4/4 kick drum start up again toward the end there), but because the other track was simply better (well done Bubble Sweetman!)

I love the idea of a regular competition, but not necessarily forcing people into producing music of a particular genre. Why not simply have a regular competition, same format as the world cup, and where people continue to enter what they like? Everyone has their own particular interests - let everyone have the opportunity to develop them.
