I just looked at Logic’s MBC. It doesn’t support the typical sidechain input setup found in Logic’s standard Compressor and other plugs. Altho Im struggling to think of any MBC that would actually allow sidechain inputs. Even the Waves stuff has this restriction.
In this case, you’d have to route your track output to different sends. On each send, set up EQ’s to separate the signal into different audio bands. You could then apply a compressor after the EQ on each send, and just set the sidechain input on the bands you want the effect on. OR if you want to be a bit cleverer, just use the sidechain filter on each compressor to select the frequency.
You can’t just stack a load of Compressors onto the original track and use their listen/key freq to pick the frews to sidechain. Because the devices are in series, the first device of the chain would impact the 2nd. The 3rd would be impacted by the 2nd and 1st etc. Splitting them out to parallel with separate devices means that each will get a full copy of the original signal with no interaction from the other bands.
You could try and side chain an EQ. In live you can sidechain the Autofilter, set a highpass and then play with the envelope attack and release. This is have the effect of turning down the low frequencies when the sidechain is active.
I’m using the multiband sidechain from Vengeance, it’s my goto plugin everytime I want to sidechain something, plus it’s very easy to use but a bit expensive :S
I used it to sidechain only the low frequencies of a bass and avoiding frequencies conflicts with my kicks, I found a better solution : a kick-bass solver plugin from Infected Mushroom dedicated just for that : “hipass” the frequencies of the bass each time a kick comes in
There should be a way to do what you need with many other compressors, I’ll let you know if I find one of them
Hey JP. If you are having trouble with this, let me know and I can show you over the internet on AIM or whatever, but there is an easier way to look at this. My last remix I did, I was working on it with Josh Gabriel and he showed me something really cool. If you want your compressor to work a certain, sidechain or not, you dont have to use a multiband compressor to do it. Abletons compressor will do it outright. There are the little EQ section. If you enable that, you can play with how your compressor responds to what frequency and you can make it pump harder or softer depending. For instance… say for easiness, you want to sidechain a bass sound (althought it obviously could be anything), but you find that your bass starts to have phasing issues around the 100 hz area. You can sidechain the bass so that the 100 hz and higher is uneffected by the sidechain, but the second it hits 100 hz, the compressor reacts. If you need help with it let me know and I can show you via Skype.
