Smooth Spectrum

Hey I have been looking at alot of hardwell, Swedish house mafia etc. tracks through a spectrum plugin called span, and there spectrum is always such a slow curve there are peaks but there always quite wide peaks, where as with my main bassline sound even with eq I cant get it to not have a drop in the 1.2k range the sound mainly peaks in the 800k and upwards of 2k, I don’t have a problem getting similar spectrum curves in the main melody section just when it comes to basslines, I am using distortion but so is all of the tracks I have looked at.

So I guess my question is how are they managing to have such a smooth spectrum regardless of the track I look at, is the frequencies range smoothed out slightly in the mastering stage. Not sure where to go from here.

Thanks for any replys.

Hmmm there are a few possibilities.

Saturation or exciters that add extra harmonics should in theory give a more even spectrum when applied to lots of individual tracks.

or

Could be just lots of EQing applied to individual parts.

multiband compression could also do this.

more than likely its a combination of all of these things.

I guess its a similar thing to applying the pink noise mixing thing. Pink noise has the property of every frequency being equal power which is what is probably giving it the pleasing sound.

Thanks for the reply Phil, I will look into some your ideas and see if I can get a bit closer. If not I will upload a picture of the spectrum comparison to show you more what I’m talking about.

Thanks again

Take a look into Har-Bal as well. That might help you in getting that same spectrum

Thanks daniaan I will look into it now appreciate the reply.

Looks like a really useful to for what im trying to, does it run as a vst? its mainly my actual bassline sound that im trying to adjust so being able to put it on that channel would be perfect.

Actually dont worry about that question, Just found a vst similar called voxengo curve eq. thanks for the help
