So im gonna dj out

WTF is going down well in clubs these days? i’ve said for years now that i didn’t want to dj in clubs any more (for the time being at least) mainly because of the bad attitudes in clubs & wanting to focus on my production, but i’ve been talked into playing out again.

anyway a friend of mine is having a birthday bash and convinced me to play, the thing is i’ve not touched a set of decks in 3 years and have not mixed in a club for almost 4 and half years. i’ve kinda got set in my ways with what i like now but don’t know if tech house, progressive and tech trance go down well in clubs as i’ve never really heard it played in clubs that i’ve been in.

all advise welcome

btw playing out tomorrow

If its your friends bash then just play what you want, im sure they know your style and approve or wouldn’t have asked you in the first place…

Those styles are still thriving, it just depends on which clubs you go to. Cant beat a good progressive night though

yeah totally agree about the prog lol. i only agreed because its a few friends, only crapped it earlier today because i’ve found out that few friends is around the 250-300 people mark lol and like i say i’ve not played in a club for years. on a plus side its only people that already know me so if all goes wrong i can put it down to having a bad night hehehe

When no one is feeling what your playing, the best thing to do is throw on the most douche bag song you have in your collection. Pull some brittany spears out, lady gaga, you get the point.

I don’t know if this really works, but in the south of the usa, this **** plays in all the clubs and people seem to like it. I find that I scare the **** out of the dance floor when I play good music. Maybe one day I’ll move to somewhere electro is appreciated.

Something inside tells me this would be a very bad idea!

I would throw on some journeycore!

Never heard of journeycore??? It’s “Don’t Stop Believing” sped up to 180 bpm! :stuck_out_tongue: If that doesn’t work, throw on some Ambient and call it a day.

hehe

Seriously tho… You can bring an eclectic mix and find out what the crowd is reacting well to then play that. F-it. Its a birthday party.

Hey Jon,

Do what I do, get there early and mess with the sound system to get a feel for the kit. Then go pop two xanax, drink some cider, get on stage, and act like you own the place! I’ve found that even if your not playing exactly what they want, if you’re putting on a show, you’re doing your job. People that say the DJ goes unnoticed are crazy. Have you ever looked at the sea of people standing at the booth staring in awe? If you can go into it with the mindset that your going to “party WITH the people” then it’s hard to not set the right vibe. Jon, honestly, you’ll be about halfway through your second rekkid before your thinking to yourself, “why did I quit doing this?!?!”. Enjoy the opportunity to play out, don’t dread it! It’s not your job, so you don’t have to be perfect!

Are you secretly paul oakenfold?

I have a feeling john will be using cdjs or turntables which might making beatmatching a touch hard when your out of it. Saying that it worked for Frankie Wilde, till he went deaf anyways!

vinyl only lol, i should be fine after the first two or three tracks i know i’ve not touched any for a while but before that i’ve been mixing since i was 14.

Much respect to anyone that still uses vinyl. Still wish we lived in those days. 1210s would never let you down.

to true lol, i still have one set of turntables in my house but no mixer atm. you can’t beat turntables for straight forward mixing & scratching imo

anyway i’ve been told this morning that they have set recording setup there so i should be able to record and see how bad or good i am.

not worried about it now, off down there in a while to pick up the keys for the club to go have a play. my friends, friend is the owner of the club. he’s said i can have a play when ever i want, although in my mind this means he will want a few free sets from me at some point (nothings ever given with out something wanted in return).

if they are your friends they will know what you play so know what to expect and if they don’t like that type of music it’s their fault for asking you to play. stay true to what you like otherwise you will have a bad night which will cross over to the crowd.

right i am off people, i’ll let you know how it went tomorrow.

my friend suggested gabba techno then nobody would guess it was a **** mix lol

laters

after giving the club a four min silence at the start of my set things turned out great, not going to say the set went with out struggle and i found it almost impossible monitor. after the first track i switched off the booth and slip cued my headphones. two or three tracks in and i was good to go all night, the next dj had to basically drag me away from the decks lol.

in short i loved it, they’ve offered me a residency and my own night if i want it.

a good result

thanks for all the advise lads i took note and played what i was happy playing only drunk one drink during my set but was enough to let me loosen up and start to get into it, i found once i was dancing to the music so where other people.

although my wife did say i looked constipated trying to get my first mix in lol

Glad to see someone still using vinyl and not letting the software do it for you, because you haven’t mixed for a while you’ll love iT! they won’t be able to pull you away, no need to worry:-)

Did you record the mix by any chance? This time next year we’ll be downloading your pod-cast direct from ibiza

i had totally forgotten about it, i don’t know if i was supposed to press record on something or if the guy was recording the whole thing. i need to get back in contact with the guy so i will ask if they recorded the night or sets and if they have, i would have no problems uploading it.

i always been of the opinion that you should play whatever you want and **** what people think… its all about your style and creativity and if that transcends onto the dancefloor and people enjoy it then great!!! If not… they probably dont have any taste at all - id never let anyone tell me what to play and what not to play. Cant beat the feeling of playing out and the crowd loving what you are doing… bet it feels good to be back djing… i know i always love the opportunity to play out when i can - not a lot else comes close to that feeling.
