Do you guys at sonic academy intend to up the level of the tutorials? i am a huge fan of this website and of the tutorials as you probably guess by my post count .
however in the last couple of tutorials i donāt feel like SA have pushed the progression level of the tutorials. most if not all of the tutorials seem to be very beginner orientated and i personally would like to see more intermediate, advanced or even pro levels to the tutorials. i donāt speak for eveyone of course, but i feel that there are enough beginner tutorials to get to grips with all the basics.
i feel that if people have watched the tutorials avalible now, they should be more that ready to jump into the deeper end of production.
I agree 200%. My post count isnt as high as Jons but I can say that I get the basic parts of production. I understand how to make a drum beat. I believe that itās to delve into the advanced parts of production that will take us to the next level. I think the Reaktor series is the beginning of that, but I think its just the tip of the iceberg. Why not do a bit on music theory? Everything is aimed at beginners. Many of us on here (especially the ones that have been on here for a while) get the beginner stuff. My though is that if you donāt get it, watch the videos again. All the information is there for any beginner. Iām sorry for the criticism, but why is there another video of exactly the same tutorial in a different DAW? It should all cross over. I learned from the D&B tutorial on Logic and crossed over the principals over to Ableton. Not too hardā¦ Especially if you watched the preceding tutorials produced.
Its time to move to the next step. Itās time to go from beginner to advanced. And from there, we should move to professional. We, at some point start learning the things that make the best producers of our time great. We want to learn their techniques. Its time to move on.
i didnāt realize that videos have been converted from one DAW to another!!! this is a total waste of time for the SA team, please correct me if you donāt feel this to be so.
i know that this is predominantly ableton based tutorial site but i donāt mind seeing tutorials in what ever software the tutors feel more comfortable with, i would rather the tutorial be full on because the tutor is comfortable with his chosen software.
sorry i did forget to mention that the new reaktor tutorial is a nudge in the right direction
Yeah iām in full agreement with the above posts, the tutorials weāve had already are fantastic and enough to get anyone up to intermediate level, in fact all i know is from what iāve learnt from here and from the computer music / future music magazines, thatās it. Iām pretty confident to say iām intermediate level and thatās all thanks to Sonic Academy. Iād really like to see some more advanced / pro stuff though, the reaktor tut is good and defo at a level iām on about, but at the same time, iād like this pro approach at the over all production of tracks too, so i can take my productions from the home studio, into a quality good enough of getting signed.
I also fully agree that making the same tutorial but for different DAWs is a waste of time, itās easy to cross over on any DAW, you dont have to have the exact DAW to follow the tuts. I learnt from the D&B tut and I dont even have logic but was fully confident enough to apply the techniques to Ableton.
If youād rather do all tutorials in Logic thatās fine, in Cubase thats fine also, whatever your prefered DAWā¦ just donāt waste time making the same tuts but for diff DAWs.
I also feel that constantly doing āHTSLā tutorials getās stale, for instance i have both a HTSL tech house and a HTSL minimal tech house tutorial and both are pretty much exactly the same, such a waste of time.
Lets start concentrating on āhow to produce a good release worthy trackā, full of techniques that can be applied to any track, regardless of genre.
Hey guys I hate to say it but I think weāve graduated.
Thereās still some more techniques to learn though so yeah I am with you hoping the SA team crank us up a notch or 2.
I think most of us are ready for the next level.
I wasnāt even aware the d&b tutorial was or is being converted for Liveā¦where was it mentioned as I havenāt read or seen anything?
Hate to jump on the bandwagon but im with you guys i feel that there needs to be progressionā¦ i know sa have to " cater for the greater "
but also Ā feel that thereās more than enough beginner content to get on with ā¦
s.a is like a super car in terms of their productionsĀ so lets pop the hood and see how the engine works !
ANYONE READING THIS WE NEED YOUR OPINIONS, WE KNOW YOU ARE THERE WATCHING THE VIDEOS TO AND QUIETLY BROWSING THE THREADS!!! GET IN ON THIS AND HAVE YOUR SAY

Yeah. Please everyone speak up! Not only to chime in, but to get your post count up to catch up to Jon!
This is a family forum everyone. Donāt be the dumb child that the parents left behindā¦like I wasā¦

hi guys,
hopefully we will be able to get more advanced with our tuts in the coming months as we recruit more staff .
at the minute we are trying to cover all bases before moving on to more advanced stuff.
Cubase 5 is coming up soon and its pretty much a beginners course on it using electro house as a base for it.
Reaktor was new however and i have more planned for it that is very advanced!
just trying to ease it in over time, but trust me as we continue to grow we will be able to offer you more in depth videos !
Hey Bry,
Iām not a Cubase user, however a Cubase tutorial would be welcome. However, why do a tutorial that has already been done? Why not a completely new genre instead? You could fulfill the needs of showing a new genre, but do it in Cubase. You just killed two birds with one stone!
What Iām wondering is this, what hasnāt been covered that a beginner can not learn from over 200+ hours of tutorials? Things just donāt add up and the senior members of the site donāt get it either.
I joined this site to get better. And I have. Many of us have. But its time to go to the next level. Its like having a Bugatti Veyron or a Ferrari and having a speed limiter stuck at 65 mph (105 kph for you European members).
Everything that has been discussed here was vocalized by me in the SA survey I took a few weeks back, but if vocalizing it here would help then Iāll do it here too.
Glad to hear that more advanced tuts are in the works but Iām thinking I may have to put my month to month subscription on hold until they come out. The Reaktor tut was a good jumping off point but I think tutorials that cover music theory from a MIDI perspective (none of the bass and treble clef stuffā¦I see things better in MIDI piano rolls) and more advanced techniques are definitely what Iām looking for.
I wonāt even mind if you get that C-3PO-sounding guy from boyinaband to teach some things but I do hope you can make this advanced user wishlist a reality.
Good luck guys!
Hmmm, Iāve only been on this site for a couple months and I must sayā¦Iāve not only learned alot, but Iāve learned almost everything I know about music production here. I agree doing the same tut for a different DAW is a waste of time. But I believe stuff like the reaktor tut (which I have not watched) are unneeded and unnecessary. You donāt need reaktor to make a good track in my opinion, so why waste time on it. There are plenty of capable synths out there. If you wanted to get in the synth making business, then yesā¦great tut.
You guys talk about wanting more advanced tuts, but donāt really clarify, aside from mentioning the reaktor tut. Please clarifyā¦donāt be afraid to be specific.
And honestlyā¦do you guys want SA to hold your hand all the way to getting signed?
Donāt get me wrongā¦these tuts are getting a little easy to do, but each one I have learned a lot on regardless. I think a music theory/timing tut would be great too. More elaboration on how they do their midi basses/riffs/melodies would be awesome too. I think the only thing we can ask for though aside from that, is a more complex genre/genre style. We gotta pick the brain. The more we challenge them, the more we challenge us.
We canāt just say āI want more advancedā and thatās it though.

Yeah thatās my take on it.
I am really not interested in building synths in Reaktor thatās far too deep and would come at the cost of the htsl tutorials to the point I think Iād loose interest in the site.
Doubling up on tutorials also seems like a waste of time but if this site needs them in order to expand membership then I think thatās a compromise I could live with.
I donāt want to sound ungrateful since Iāve already got my moneys worth since signing up but when my subscription runs out Iād have to think long and hard about renewing it based on what is about to come.
Thereās loads of more genres to cover. I think thats where the future is.
We canāt just say āI want more advancedā and thatās it though.
@stylz
ThatsĀ a good point ,but there is a section "what videos would you like to see " and im sure weāve all put our opinions on what vids we would like to see thereĀ !
the main reason we are using an existing tutorial to cover cubase 5 is because we didnāt get a great response when we used logic to cover drum and bass. i.e. a new tutorial not covered in ableton live.
so we thought we would use cubase 5 to cover the electro house videos from a different angle making use of cubases individual features.
this way, beginners wanting to get use out of cubase 5 can watch it, so can anyone else looking to use cubase 5 or see its features.
ok well i guess i jumped the gun on repeat tutorials being done on other DAWs and didnāt think about the fact that these tutorials will pull in extra users.
as for more advanced, i would like to see in-depth tutorials in
Synthesis
Sound Processing
Sound Design
Processing Techniques
Mixing (commercial release level)
Mastering (commercial release level)
Studio Setup
Acoustic Treatment
Recording and Treating Vocals
