Sonic maximzer

hi guys

just got a sonic maximizer and tried it on a few sounds in a mix im doing and it makes the sounds absolutely amazing. i even put it on the kick drum and that sounds fantastic now as well. i just wanted to ask, would it be worth putting it on more or less evrything? because it just takes any sound you put it on to a different level and brightens it up big style. what dya reckon ppl?

cheers

Going to show my ignorance now - please show sympathy. What’s a sonic maximiser?

its great i’ve been using it for around 2 years now and love it, i’ve recently upgraded to the sonic sweet package and would highly recommend it.

Sonic Maximizer is great when creating kick drums and great for bass, if you drop it on the master out and use maybe only a 1db boost it sounds amazing but too much and you’ll put some real muddiness in the mix.

i recently bought this, its superb. i dont use it on everything but i always use it on my kick!

I will be the antagonist and highly advise against it!

HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean not to get it, but I know Jon has been making music for a while. He knows when to use it and when not to use it. You should first try to make music without it and learn how to fit everything in your mix without adding anything like that in to your tunes. Doing this on all tracks, can make the ears tired. This is meant to be used as a tool, not a necessity.

agreed howard this plug like many others should be use sparingly.

yeah nice point howard! just knowing when to use it is the tricky bit

just recapping on this suggestion you made howard! so then how do you know when to use it and when not. because now its there its hard to ignore it

I would personally use it to make sounds pop out, but thats about it. Its like using an exciter. Sounds great, but only when you really need it. It will help your sounds pop out.

it can add more detail to hat loops and is great on vocals to be fair it sounds great on just about anything but like reverb if you use it on everything you’ll completely cloud the mix, i’d recommend using it like a reverb and maybe only picking one or two elements to feed it with

nice 1

I downloaded the demo a while back and I was impressed.

However I think (in its basic form) it basically sticks a limiter on, and boosts around 200 and 10,000Hz (I think) these being the sort of sonic sweet spots.

I went back and tried doing this manually with a limiter and EQ and got similar enough results that I didn’t pay for the full version.

I suspect you can get a lot more out of the sonic maximiser than what I was using it for though

you can get similar results using plug-ins like you say, but for me sonic maximizer just adds a little something to the mix that i personally really love. i guess when you have people that constantly talk about analogue mixing desks, i am the same with this plug-in.

Yeah, I definitely liked how it sounded. Maybe a lil too much.

I could see myself adding it to everything!

think thats a major danger with any good plug-in over (used lol)

Ive used sonic maximizer but also like the colouring units found in ozone 3 and the Sony plugins - there good ones as well.
