Sound as a Pound!

Hi guys, hope you’re all well and that everything’s good in the world of music! :cool:br
br
Okay, so I’m looking to buy a new set of headphones and am looking at something that I can use for reference monitoring.br
br
I’ve done a lot of research online and am leaning towards some Beyerdynamic DT880’s. They seem to have a very neutral sound to them and everyone seems to be raving about them! :w00t:br
br
The problem I have is that I’m unable to try any out as theres no music stores in my area that stock them so would have to buy them online, which would mean I can’t return them if they aren’t as good as I want them to be.br
br
I’ve also read that you would benefit from having an amp for them as anything over 250ohms struggles to generate the kind of sound you would want from them. I currently have a Saffire Pro 6 soundcard but I’m not sure that the headphone port is powerful enough.br
br
If this is the case, can anyone recommend an amp that would work with these that isnt gonna cost me the same as the headphones! lol br
br
I did try running a search on here for Bayerdynamic and Amp but couldnt see anything relevant so apologies if I missed it.

I used my HD600s with a saffire with no bother…they have high ohm. they wont blow your ears off and wouldn’t be much use for DJing but loud enough to mix on… i rarely had them past 3/4

Thanks for getting back to me Phil. I noticed that the Sennheisers are 300ohms, whereas these Beyers are 600ohms.br
br
Bob Katz recommended having an amp for the Sennheisers as there wouldnt be enough punch in the bass without it so thats why I’m a little cautious about buying these.br
br
I need to be able to hear them before I buy them really. Why did all the music stores have to close down and become internet based!! Grrrrbr
br

I also suggest Sennheiser HD600 or 650’s amazing headphones.

i have the HD600’s and I would totally marry them. Sadly, the world is not ready for our kind of love.br

ha ha ha I feel the same about my HS80’s mate!br
br
Okay, so now I’m leaning more towards the HD600’s. I need to try and scour the country for a store in the North West that sells all these headphones so I can try before I buy!

Has anyone tried using the HD600’s through a laptop headphone port?

yeah do it all the time on my mac

No need for a headphone amp then Phil? Ive been trying to look at reviews for these and just keep getting told that you need an amp which opens up an even bigger can of worms…br
br
All I want is a decent set of headphones that I can do a decent enough mix on with my laptop with while away from my studio set up. lol

ive never used them with an amp… they arent the loudest headphones but i have never had a problem in relatively quite conditions. like i can sit with the missus while shes watching the telly and work away.

Sounds like they’ll do for what I need them for then! Thanks for the speedy response as always Phil

Hey en1gma, you should check out the ‘distance selling regulations’ where your from. Anything you buy online you can send back for whatever reason you like within 7 days in the UK. br

I use AKG K701 headphones and cannot recommend them enough, they take a little while to burn in but after 100 hours or so the sound quality is amazing. I’ve got Dynaudio monitors but rarely need to use them.
