Sound in '3d'

I’m gonna annoy everyone if I keep talking about it on threads so here’s a dedicated one about 3d sound - something i’m very interested in.

Basically I want to make sounds that appear in 3d space on normal speakers. Is this done using binuaral plugins? or is it a special technique that relies on delays and small delay times? Can a sound move up or down or up and down or up and down and left and right or up and down and left and right and forwards and backwards?

Sure can!

Hello Jamie, I do like your videos, you are very generous with your time and knowledge so thanks for addressing me directly. This is definitely a cool effect, I could hear that working well in a techno or tech house tune. For me though it feels more like a doppler and when I closed my eyes I didn't really get the feeling of the 3 dimensions. My mate has Logic and he says the Binuaral panner can do this but I use Ableton and I want to find a solution for that. Thanks for your help anyway though Jamie it's much appreciated.

I was actually reading a bunch about this today, very cool vid Jamie!

anyone else got a 3d trick up their sleeves?

Dom,

Not quite sure why you are obsessing so much about the logic panner, but here’s the reality: when you change the channel strip options within logic to be binaural, and you double-click the pot to open the panner interface, all that is showing you is exactly the same thing I went over in my video, but wrapped very neatly into one little plug that does all the work for you, yet fails to explain WHY or HOW the basic concepts of panning, frequency and volume create the 3D image in a mix.

Ableton is quite capable of providing this type of structure if you simply have a command of the basic CONCEPTS that make it work in the first place. For example, combine the pan pot on your track in Ableton’s “mixer” in session view with a utility device and map the “width” parameter to a macro. That way, you can control not only the width of the signal, but the orientation of it as well (with the utility and pan pot, respectively). This is similar to the action you’d take to change the arms of the Logic panner with regards to the depth and width parameters on the interface.

Second, the binaural panner in Logic enables you to achieve a spherical orientation, simulating above or below with regards to the source. Know what they are doing there? They are simply EQing the sound slightly to make the sound appear to be “higher” or “lower” in the sound spectrum. In other words, when one wants to go high, the plug EQs out the lows a bit. When one wants to go low, it EQs out the highs slightly. There also seems to be an embedded algorithm that modulates the volume a bit to enhance this effect. This is again, easily done by throwing an EQ8 into an effects rack and mapping a high shelf and low shelf to a macro, thus giving you the ability to control the height with a single knob.

Lastly, for depth, you could add a reverb unit to the effects rack with the wet/dry knob mapped to a macro, which would essentially work in tandem with the utility device to control the perception of distance between a sound and the listener. It doesn’t have to be a huge amount, but enough to trick the ear into thinking the space has borders.

So, with knowledge of the basic concepts that make the binaural panner in Logic work the way it does, about 15-minutes worth of work, and your ears, you could easily build your own binaural panner in an effects rack, and save it for future use in your racks cache. Need a video, or does this make sense?

Hey Jamie

I have no idea if I will ever use that effect but the video was clearly explained so I certainly have a better understanding of using those tools to create aural illusions. So thanks again!

Fair play Jamie, yeh, I think i’m probably obsessed because my mate has been implying the binuaral effect is the ultimate solution for 3d sound. Maybe i’m looking to 3d sound being my solution when in fact there are other things I could do with improving first. I dunno, i think contrary to what i would wish I might have further to go with this production thing that I had hoped. All i know is that the ableton method feels a bit long winded… I just prefer plugins that are designed for a job - maybe i’m just lazy. I think it’s fair to say that I keep falling for this ‘this plugin will change your life’ thing… it’s not good for my wallet amongst other things

Plug-ins are tools, that’s all they are. Learn the basics.

I agree with Dom - I think Jamie is a cnut too

Haha, you’re just saying that because I wouldn’t give you any last night you dawg you!

Damb straight J - I know you dont have what I like :P

What? Jamie doesn’t have a penis? You heard it first here folks.

“Damb…” you guys are good! It took less than one page to hijack this thread!

Is Dom short for Condom?
