Does anyone a basic rule when picking what sounds your trying to make work with each other or is just something you develop with your ears after awhile?
To me, its just High, Middle, Low.
Contrasts: Bright / Dark.
Available space: Long / Short.
Frequency ranges… Trying not letting things clash… and keeping different elements in different notes / octaves.

very well put! +1
Experiment all the time - even if you think it does not fit twist it, granulate it - play around with levels pan, reverb distortion delays - thats how I started
Probably won’t work with every genre - but now I think just out of pure practice I instantly know if something will fit or not
I’d say just try.
Of course you have bass mid and high. Dark and bright.
But you simply need to listen whether a new sound fits the sounds already in use. Is the key correct? Is the EQ-ing correct? Etc.
