Hi guys,
Hope you’re all well and having a good wkend so far! Okay so I posted in the music tech forum about bagging myself some Yamaha HS80’s for an absolute bargain, but it turns out I may have spoken to soon.
I received a call from the seller explaining that when he has gone to package up one of the speakers he has noticed a split in the cone, about an inch long :crying: But he’s happy for me to come and see them and apologised profusely about it.
I figured I’d go check them out cause even if there’s a split in one it might not affect the sound, plus the other will still be good value for money. When he got the other speaker out of the box there was some water on the back of it! He said it must be the change of temperature that must have caused it. I couldn’t believe my luck…
Anyway, the seller has asked me to take them away at no charge to me and to test them as they have NEVER been used before. I’ve got 4wks to decide if they are what I want and if not then I can just return them.
I’ve attached a picture of the split in the cone and was wondering if anyone has come across this before? I’ve tried running a search on Google but cant really come up with anything that’s helpful so am turning to the S.A. faithful
Abort… If it looks like a dog and smells like a dog 99 times it’s a dog.
Do yourself a favour and save up a bit more and get a new pair. The translation of audio from electrons to air is way to important to skimp on.

Ha ha very true Phil! I’ve been sat thinking about it all day and am defo on the same page as you. At first it sounded like a bargain, but now with the split in the cone and potential water damage its a train wreck waiting to happen!
Even if the speakers were fine I just dont wanna take the risk of them breaking in the next couple of months and then having to shell out for a new pair anyway.
One quick question though Phil. I’ve bought a Saffire 6 card and already have some HS50’s, what would be the best way of connecting both sets of speakers up? 2 Y cables into the 2 x 1/4" ports OR connecting all 4 cables separately into the 4 RCA ports?
As you can probably tell I have no clue when it comes to hardware :Whistling:
Yeah main ones using balanced jacks and your other pair with the rca…
also grab one of these
great for the money and can help with any ground loop or interferance
Ah looks good mate. Just had a search online and there’s another one £10 cheaper that seems to have been getting a lot more feedback.

Worth a look, d’ya reckon???
Yeah just looks like a re-branded one. im sure it does the same thing.
I’ve finally got around to plugging those speakers in (been renovating the house) and they sound really good! I cant tell whether that split is making a difference to the bass but I’m still gonna give them back though as like you said Phil “if it looks like a dog…”
I just don’t wanna risk anything happening to them and then having to fork out again anyway. :crying:
I was wondering though if you had any speaker stands that you could recommend? I’ve looked on forums and they say use cinder blocks, but I need them to be 3 feet high then the speakers on top (monitoring height) so is that not an excessive/dangerous amount of cinder blocks?
I saw these Millenium BS-500 Set – Thomann UK
Any thoughts???
