I got my sound really wide-ness seriously… I put one speaker on the left hand wall and the right speaker on the right hand wall and stood in the middle… it was almost quadraphonic my friends… trus me.

Sorta what you imagine.
In Ableton’s EQ (and others I guess), there is a switch that changes it from Left/Right mode to Mid/Side.
In Mid/Side mode the EQ adjustments you make affect either the centre of the stereo field, or just the wider/outer (panned) parts.
So if you want to roll off bass from the hard left/right you can, or likewise if you wanted to brighten up the stereo field… etc
