Hey guys. I’m having problems trying to get them to sit together. I mean say I have my sub bass up to 120HZ I now put my bass on top of that but where do I filter it. How steep of a curve? Do I just set a high pass filter at 120HZ with a Q 0.80 in Ableton or do you usual want some of the frequencies to overlap & set the high pass on the bass at about 100HZ instead?
Also how far do you usually go down(e.g C1, A1, B0) to get a nice feeling for the sub bass. I know this is different all the time but maybe just some general direction.
Thanks for any help:)
Im doing a bit about sub bass in the next tutorial…
heres what i learned.
- you really need good speakers 8" + or you really can hear the proper sub.
preferably test your stuff on club sound system when mixing.
- if your using a lot of sub really filter off your main bass <500hz
- its best to keep the patterns the same… while not essential it defiantly helps things not sounding all over the place.
- too much is bad
I have Mackie mr8’s and would agree with you 100% Phil. Before that I had 5" speakers and you couldn’t really hear any bass at all. I think the cutoff range was like 75 but with no thump of course. None the less, I hope to god that the sub bass you are working on is for the minimal tutorial!!! I can’t f’ing wait for that!!!

Experiment with high/low shelf filters instead of high/low pass, you might get what you’re looking for

Can I ask what speakers you used to have Raymondsar? THing is iv been looking into getting a new pair of monitors for a while and I just cant get good advice. Im torn weather to get some Adam A7s or not because even though I do believe they are brilliant, they only have a 6’5" cone and not sure if that will be big enough for working on bass/sub-bass. I produce minimal/techno so bass is a big issue for me. Iv looked into bigger speakers (krk vxt8) but people always warn me of saying the bottom end will be exaggerated and no good if your not used to working with such speakers (I here this all the time about mackie speakers!).
I currently have a pair of yamaha msp5 and although they really bring the mids out, the bottom end is just not deep enough.
cheers

some the more modern monitors produce the lower frequencies using only a 6.5 inch driver, personally i don’t think you can beat the KRK rp6 with the matched sub for the price they sound great together.
Subs are another thing iv been heavily warned off and will probably avoid due to my smallish room.
Think ill just end up with the a7’s. Cant really spend justifying any more than that and done think theres a better monitor in that price range.
The A7’s go down to 47 hz so that probably low enough for most people. i think that there’s not many instruments that produce frequencies much lower than that anyway except for probably a double bass or church organ lol.

My Alesis M1 Active mk2’s have 6’5" cone and i get some great bass response IMO.
I’m really happy with the sound i get for the price i paid for the speakers.
I do really want the Event Opals though, but at 2k a pop i can’t see that happening.

Future Music Magazine really creamed there pants over them.
Damn, I let this thread slip! Sorry for not answering earlier! I had some M-Audio 5" something or others. They were old and beat to hell, but weren’t all that great even new. I had to get a sub which drove me insane, because I could never get the balance right. Now that I have the MR8s I was able to ditch the sub, save some space and electricity! Plus get a killer sound that is neutral! You want to make sure you get monitors that can handle the type of music you want to make or it’s pointless. Also, make sure you get really flat, neutral monitors. Otherwise if they add too much color, you won’t get a true mix… That’s my two and a half.
