Wasn’t that the definition in the first place?
POP music or POPULAR music.
Pop music (a term that originally derives from an abbreviation of “popular”) is usually understood to be commercially recorded music, often oriented towards a youth market, usually consisting of relatively short, simple songs utilizing technological innovations to produce new variations on existing themes. Pop music has absorbed influences from most other forms of popular music, but as a genre is particularly associated with the rock and roll and later rock style. - Wiki
Now what’s not commercial about David Guetta and Snoop? It totally fits the description.
PS. JamieinNC, if you haven’t heard about Guetta before you must have been living on a small rock in the middle of an ocean. Can’t believe you missed: “Just a Little More Love”, “Love Don’t Let Me Go”, “The World is Mine”, “Love Is Gone”, etc.
What I notice, Slender, is that for anything to be commercially viable these days, it has to have 1/3 rap/hip-hop, 1/3 latin, and 1/3 dance or else it just ain’t gonna fly. We’re entering another massive “fusion” period like in the 70s when everything comes together like a stew. Except this time it leaves a really awful aftertaste.
And considering Mussi already eluded to the fact that “it’s gay” and didn’t get kicked off the board, I’ll make the statement I was going to make initially and ask, “Did Dogg grow a vagina?”
By the way, did we ever get something close to an answer to the original question? I know I did my best to at least TRY and offer a solution, but after that not much was mentioned.

[quote]slender (26/04/2011)[hr]I suppose I was just showing my age - pop music to me has always been more of a traditional band structure than its popularity and chart success
For example would you call AC/DC a pop band during their heady days in the charts, pure pop bands I would include were The Beatles and in more recent times (to me anyway) would be ABC, Orange Juice, Haircut 100, Pulp etc etc
Since the explosion of Rnb and dance music I would agree that the boundaries of what Pop music is somewhat obscured - since I have no idea what is or is not in the charts for so many years I an probably the wrong person to have made that flippant comment - but it did make me think what is POP

I pride myself on not always being completely aware of everything in the soundspace. Honestly, before “When Love Takes Over” I had never heard of him.
