I would go with a Mac. Others say PC, but I would at least look into it. For the money, you can get a 15" MacBook Pro, almost all the way decked out, and you can get some plugins with the money left over.
thanks! looks like i will be looking into a mac then!
I’m also baffled on which software to purchase…I have been looking into Ableton & Cubase. Are any better than others or is it just down to personal preference?
Ableton, Cubase, Logic are the main players. There is also Fruity Loops (NO!), Sonar, and Pro Tools. I just use Ableton but you should try out what you like first. Everyone has different preferences.

Can I ask how you transfer your tracks from ableton to logic jon? The two would be a dream solution if there was a easy/fast way to transfer tracks into logic from ableton without bouncing everything to audio.
There is no fast way. You can not rewire into Logic or out of Logic. You have to bounce each channel and import the stems. Too much work for me unless you’re doing a final mixdown.

the best way is to bounce the audio, but usually at this point the track is almost finished so there is no need for the speed that most people crave during the early stages
