Why is a supersaw called a supersaw? this has always puzzled me. My mate reckons that only the roland jp8000 can qualify as having one and anyone else is just on the blag.
And what’s a hypersaw?
And, sorry… whilst i’m here. If I sampled a supersaw synth or hypersaw synth and played back the notes would I get an authentic Trance sound? Or would somebody with good ears be able to tell the difference and accuse me of being a fake?
Lol first off no one is going to call you a fake for using a supersaw that didnt come out of a JP.
All a supersaw and hypersaw is, is an oscillator.

But I thought an oscillator is what generates the tone? The tone is decided by the choice of waveform and therefore the supersaw or hypersaw would be the waveform and not the oscillator?? Maybe it’s my mate leading me up the garden path again.

That’s a mega saw
When you take a lot of saw waves, put them together and detune them you get a nice bright and phat sound. What companies like Roland did on the JP8000 was make 1 oscilator out of a few saw waves detuned, they called it a supersaw. Access took this concept a bit further by adding even more saw waves and they called it a hypersaw.
What you have to learn is that there are like a few basic wave forms that make an oscilator. You have sines, saws, triangle, pulse, square and noise (usually white but some synths have pink and brown noise too). Now I hear you say 'but my synth has 20different types of oscilators and lotsa different wave forms etc But 99.9% of the time they will just be variants off the basic waves. For example a trisaw is just a combination of a triangle and a saw and vintage sw1 is just a saw wave with a bit of harmonic character that you might of got from an analogue synth.
Check out my thread in the main section titled ‘A great new synth’. The synth im talking about only has 1 oscillator and that is the supersaw which they have tried to copy exactly from the JP8000/80
If you download that synths demo and just run the init patch you can hear exactly what a supersaw is. Now when you wanna have the supersaw SOUND that you hear in alot of trance and pretty much all dance music then thats a whole different topic and once again this synth or any synth will have presets that you can study and see how it works. I think sylenth1 even has a preset called supersaw and superzaag which is dutch for super saw…

Thanks for that, it’s been a real eye opener. Has anyone created a synth with a gigasaw? like a thousand sawtooths each detuned and panned to create the ultimate trance or euphoric rnb lead patch?
Tbh u dont need even more saws, you can pretty much make the lead your talking about on any synth with carefull quality processing on top.
Think Logic has one Dom - Its called LDFSAW in ES2
FFS, just open Alchemy and push the number of oscillators on all four slots to 600. There’s your tera-saw!

Yes, I was thinking the same thing.
Could it be? I guess it’s been a while.
I hope so. Has anyone said his name three times whilst looking in a mirror?
I dont understand why anyone would need that many saws?

My Logic mate asks is that a Digiwave?
