This week we welcome back Richie aka Dirty Secretz for a new set of tips and tricks in Ableton in Tech Tips Volume 47.
Over these 10 videos Richie shares some of the tricks he uses to help keep interest and variation in his tracks, percussive tips to help improve your drums, and simple workflow techniques to speed up the creative process.
We focus on breakdowns with micro-breaks, held strings and a cool use of wet/dry automation on delay and reverb. We then move on to creating our own unique beats using our voice and how to get a skipping house beat by adding percussion with different groove settings. We also look at some essential workflow tips and how to save MIDI patterns and channel defaults along with using Ableton 10’s collections to help organisation and finding what you want quicker.
Finally, we check out iZotope’s free ‘Imager’ plugin to help widen our sounds in the stereo field.
Easy to follow and super accessible for users of all abilities, these Tech Tips will get you working faster and sounding great!
Really enjoying these tips, some useful stuff in here, thanks. Just out of curiosity: the Held String - with an effect like this, at what point in the track building process would you think about adding these kind of details? Do you finalise your layout and basic structure, and then add these details, or add them as you go?
Thanks for the great tips. Already started using some of them. I also really loved how Ableton looked with pink buttons and all, Can I find it somewhere to download ?
re: Drum midi templates. This is a great idea, and a real time-saver. To save even more time, instead of drawing these in manually when you’re creating them, you can simple drag the midi from the groove library (in Ableton) and this will create the pattern for you, then you can save it with the dif swing amounts. Particularly good for shakers and tambourines!
