Sony MDR-V700 are the best studio head phones imo.

you’ll need to make sure you get the V700 and not the Z700, the Z range are cheap copies. although they are still made by sony they are made with very cheap components to keep the price down they still sound nice but you can really tell the difference when you get the two side by side

I’ve got the Sony MDR V700 and used to swear by them, however the last few months have been mainly using my friends Sennheiser HD 25 which i think are better now.

There are also the Technics which are good too.

Pretty much anyone you ask will give you their preferance of one of the above, best bet is to try them all out and see which is for you.

I have the sennheisers or whatever they are called ,Lasted me for donkeys years.
Down to personal preference and budget of course.:)

Sennheiser HD 25  for me.

Really good build quality - and most parts of them can be replaced with new ones. Get these and you should never ever need a new pair.

Once again its down to peronal taste.

any particular price range?

In general i think ‘open headphones’ are more ideal for mixing as they produce a more natural sound and can hold a greater sound stage than most ‘closed headphones’ in the same price range.

For example i own sennheisser 280 pros which are a closed model and the basses feel more resonate and ‘boomy’ and make it harder to pick out individual sounds in a mix…while the open architecture model i own just makes it that little bit clearer.

although for just listening it could be said the closed models make things sound more dope hah.

im no expert on the best of the best but ide just look for a bunch of reviews on open headphones and go try them out if you can…

oh and ignore everything i just said if its for Djing at all as open headphones suck for that and in the end open or closed doesn’t matter just what ive found.

HD 25 are great for dj-ing but studio use??? not for me sorry very hollow sounding in the studio imo

I just got myself some Shure SRH440’s for when I am at college and they work a treat, if anything I am getting a better sound out of them than my studio monitors at the moment!

I love my HD 25, but headphones are a lot about personal preference. There is loads of very good headphones around so its more down to what you’re using them for and if thay comfortable, etc. if you a DJ lets not forget about cool factor too

I used to have the Sony’s for DJing, they were great, but they broke easily.

Supposedly the AKG monitor cans are the best for monitoring music production.

I heard this, but have had mine years and no problem so who knows, maybe it depends how you treat them or i’ve just been lucky lol.

i think they are much better suited to the kinda pop vocal side of studio production.

Preciesely what happened to mine… on both sides! They were held together with electrical tape!

unfortunately you need a subscription to access full article :ermm:

Just tried both the Sony V700’s and the Sennheiser HD25s for EQ monitoring and the V700s cut it I think as they have a more crispier all round sound, especially on the mid-top.

For DJing though I prefer the HD25s but have to agree with Jon here, they’re maybe not as good for studio.

i used to use Sennheiser HD25s for djing but switched to pioneer hdj1000’s i used both in clubs and found the pioneers won hands down everytime and i use them for production too there not ideal for it but i cant afford nothing better…

Sennheiser HD 25-1 for me also!

Along with Sonic Academy another quality product made in IRELAND!
