The easy way

Sound sounds sounds

Sound design is a job in itself, I can make patches from f-all but it takes time. I’m not the kinda guy who likes to sit around for hours making a sound, I get bored with it.

What I tend to do is have a sound in my head, find a patch that is like it and repatch it to what I want.

So with that in mind recently I bought a few sounds banks which are pretty good.

Where oh where can I find more sound banks, good ones with which can be used in Trance as well as other geners of dance.

When I’m rich and famous and producing and DJing I’ll employ a sound designer to sit with me and make the sounds I want when producing, now, this shouldnt very long so all you potentail candidates, get designing sound and a position will be up soon!

No really on a more serious note (not that I wont be rich etc etc) can we list site where we can get patches, free or to buy please and thanks??

Check out Vengeance, Arksun and Ummet Ozcan. You got Adam van Baker right? I also tend to use presets, tweak em and then start layering to get unique-ish sounds but i have to admit there is something gratifying about hearing a sound in your track that you know you made from scratch. But i dont know enough about synthesis to patch everything i use in a track. I can get by without employing a sound designer what i really want is sum1 to sit next to me to play in melodies that i sing out loud. That would be awesome!

there is no shame in using pre made sounds, producers in the past have paid hundreds and even thousands for hardware synths and only used the stock sounds.

Mixing

Mastering

Producing

writing

sound design

are all jobs and skills in their own right and if you want to be a master of one you need to pick it and spend your life perfecting it, or simply choose to be jack of all trades and make mix and master your own music.

A buddy of mine took the sound design course at pointblank in London. Said it changed his whole world. But i’m with you… trying to make every single sound organically is just a long drawn out process that tires my ears…

Tbh you really can get some unique sounds simply by layering presets. Its nice to be able to hear sounds and think to yourself ok that is made up of a saw and a sine with an Lfo on the cutoff etc etc.

How about just making your own sounds. Learn synthesis. Presets will only get you so far.

I was thinking about it lately actually, and I agree with John, there is now way you’re going to be good at everything so you may as well focus on things that you enjoy the most.

But bit of programming knowledge comes handy for customising the sound

i have days where i just make sounds and others when i got a melody idea and then go to these sounds and get the idea down as quickly as possible

i find its quicker to make a sound than go through 1000’s of presets

some acts that just use presets, i find it quite obvious as it just sounds like a demo cd for their go to synths

but at the end of the day ,if it sounds good…
