Hi Phil,
Quick Q really, in the minimal techno tutorial at the end of the ‘arrange more bass’ video, you used two high pass filters one after each other with almost the same settings.
Just interested to know why you used two and not just the one?
Cheers
using 2 24db filters in serials is like using one 48db filter you get a sharper cutoff.
Cool! Never really thought about this, cheers for the tip
I never knew that either but then I use Fabfilter ProQ which has a 48db filter which I use all the time
I got the Pro-Q a little while ago and I really like it but it does eat the CPU when you have it on every channel.
Nice little mention guys, I know little of this side of things. Anyone rate or used ozone ? (more mastering i guess)
I havent got that far in the production side of things to worry about this stuff too much but I guess it will matter one day soon.
Does it make that much difference to you tracks? I have used eq tips from SA tuts and the in house Ableton stuff has made it ‘better’ sounding, would using one of these products raise the bar again or is it horses for courses?
thanks
Hi, buying different eq is a funny thing to do really because you can get exactly the same results with the tools built into Ableton and with less CPU overhead. But I have found that sometimes it is easier for me to achieve the results I want with Pro-Q.
Part of the problem I was having was I was using eq3 to do 48DB cuts and I was finding my mixes were becoming muddy. It turns out that eq3 colours the sound, and too many causes muddy mixes. If I had know the trick above I might not have bought Pro-Q, but I am really glad I did.

TBH I haven’t really found that, I also switch of the pre/post eq when I am done with the track
I do find the Pro-Q alot quicker and easier to use than the Ableton one - but if someones on a budget I would not reccomend it as a must have product
Great tutorial!

Maybe it is just that my tracks are getting bigger, and it happened at the same time as getting Pro-Q!
Phil - Really good video.

Either that or I have a super dupa PC - LOL
Do you have their compressor, its pretty slick to but I don’t use it as much as Abletons
Wow, Phil, great link!
Regardless of whether someone’s got Pro-Q or not there’s a lot of really good info about EQ in there. Can it be stickied somewhere?
Sticky away… But I think its already in the Techno Production thread.
Not 100% - But I think I did it. Never hurts seeing it more though!

Actually I think you are right
The more sources / references the better I say.
Its a really cool Vid. Should be recommended as much as Span.

Funny you should say that because I have just upgraded my PC to an i7 950, I just need Ableton to go 64bit and to use all the cores I have.
I don’t have the compressor, but have been tempted. I have the PSP Master comp and the PSP Mixpressor, both of which I really like, but I use the Ableton compressor almost all the time as well. Maybe when I make somehting good enough to have a go at self mastering they will get used
If thats the case then I think you could live without the Pro-C as I use the ableton compressor on nearly every track
Also in the same position as you - just waiting for a 64bit too, but I am only hitting 35% cpu at the most currently
Great link Phil _ thanks
I was bangin me head, with this.
My bass (a constant pad lets say) and kick are washing over my percussion - so newbie here turns the volume up on the washed parts and everything sounds ok- when together
Drop the kick or the bass and yes youve guessed it everything else is too loud or …well…tinny is the best description, i think - not crisp.
Is it then a question of eq’ing better then (im sidechaining the bass with the kick)
This is my biggest problem atm , writing is ok, getting the mix to sit right is grinding me down
thanks
J
It’s because you’re sidechaining it Hindsite, when you drop the kick there nothing is sidechaining the bass anymore. Remember a sidechain is a compressor, so you’re compressing that signal, when that compression reduction is removed… yep you’ve guessed it, the bass turns ‘too loud’.
There are easy ways around this, which i’ll tell you about when i’m not about to head out the door…
Thanks Roben
That makes perfect sense, now you put it like that:)
I await your return
