I read somewhere, maybe here that its a good idea to get a sound that defines you as a producer so I going over all my old tunes, and the one I never complete and am going to save all the patchs, samples etc in one place! Should make things a lot easier moving forward and less f-ing about with programing sounds. Then I’ll start on a new tune I think.
Whats everyone else doing in regards to production today?
Ah yes. Deadmau5 spoke about not doing the same thing over and over again but having a signature that defines you - he was speaking about the work stimming does. To me it should be something that is almost not tangible, a certain DNA to the work that identifies it.
My first plan is to make sure I get to sit down and actually do something, but I am in the process of working out some patches I need.
Would love to know how you end up sorting everything to a central place, I have a similar problem and not sure what to do about it.
Well most of the synths I have will allow me to save patches so just make a folder to save them in, same with all my samples. For the one that done I’ll just drag and drop them from ableton into the sidebar explorer thing. That should do it I think
Its been spoken about before a bit…
Everyone should probably make their own samplepack of sounds that they know will work.
Pretty cool if you have them all EQ’d to work together as well.
A Drumkit of the best Kick / Clap / Snare / Hats / Perc etc…
I always pretty much use the same claps etc…
So I guess it’d save some time while you get inspired
Yeah I should really sit down and do that but it will take me a week I reckon
Yeah that’s what I do. But I am also thinking of getting a little more organised. Samples are easy to audition but patches less so. So thinking of bouncing down a sample along with the patches and then I can cross reference the samples faster.
Agreed, sometimes you want to just quickly lay down a melody and slot in a basic drum beat to get on with things. Pre made racks etc are invaluable for this and add to the Jam aspect of Ableton Live (if that’s what your using).
Doing the same just woke up this morning im off work for the rest of the week and had completely the same idea just putting all my own patches and samples in one specific folder should make life alot easier.
I’m doing it now, took the day off… worth doing so far, found some pretty cool stull I forgot about like some nice vocal chops I did a while ago…
did ton’s of re-organising the other day, installed a 1tb internal drive, and moved everything to that, converted all my Mp3’s to wav (not for sound quality reasons), deleted anything I didn’t need.
Collected all my samples in a kick, snare, efx folder etc…
and then organised all my patches and effect racks etc… within ableton.

I bet that took a while!!
including the conversion it took about 3 days all in all… set ti running walk off come back, repeat till done.
I believe that ‘signature’ just comes naturally, you can’t force it. If you start trying to look for it you end up only designing a false ‘signature’, create music and after a while you will start to notice a signature in what you’re making.
Sometimes it’s subtle, other times it’s more noticable.
Don’t manufacture it though, it’s gotta come from within.
Spent the whole freaking day yesterday putting all my samples into each folder. Works out better to go the folder rather than trawling thru hundreds of samples.
