You in Cali Tommy?

san diego howie

AHHHH SD…the best weather in the states!

I thought they have a good house scene in Chicago, Miami and New York?

The Chicago scene I heard has gone downhill and is pretty bad. New York is good and so is Miami, but its gone to all clubs. No more underground stuff really. Either that or I’m getting old.

yeah they do, also up in la, ive lived in san diego for 16 years and i think the scene here sucks

It’s all about partying in Europe these days anyways, the UK scene isn’t as exciting anymore. Where as in europe, everything is so fresh and new for them, plus europeans know how to party!

When we ran our night in Poland in Sept, it was unbelievable! Such an amazing crowd. You’d never get the same here in Brighton, which is why I don’t have much motivation for running a night here.

sad state of affairs, what happend to all the punters?

Because of recession and 24 hour licensing it’s really killed it in the UK. Basically whats happened is because clubs just can’t get the numbers they used to get, they can’t put in the big budgets that they’d like. Whilst on the other side of the coin, the punters are bored and want new things, they want the big budget events, with the big name DJs, however that can’t be paid for without the numbers. It’s almost a catch 22.

whats 24 hour licensing?

some of the key problems with the uk club scene are:

cheap alcohol from supermarkets - people see the prices there and think they cant afford to go out / they drink a lot before they go out and bars and clubs dont make as much money

the bars dont close at 11pm - now the bars can stay open as long as they like, so nobody needs to go and pay money to get in to a club if they just want to keep drinking

the smoking ban - there are still millions of smokers out there and its a proper chew for them to keep going outside when they want to smoke

i think all of these things have ****ed the night life industry up

not to mention there hasnt been any major music movement in the dance scene since trance, the drugs are now **** and the health and safety nazi’s wont let you tie your shoe lace without having a permit if you’re listening to music at the same time

gotta love the lovely world of politics, but thats a whole other subject…

weird. i replied to this earlier and for some reason it’s not here.

Anyways, 24 hour licensing = 24 hour drink license for licensed premises.

Tony Blair introduced it in the hope it would stop binge drinking but unfortunately it was an epic fail.

This is coming from somebody who (used to) frequent the Hollywood clubs:

#1: Everybody does this, everywhere. My thing was walking up to a club with a bottle of Gatorade w/ a healthy dose of rum, and toss the bottle as we walked in.

#2: Clubs (and bars) stop serving alcohol at 2am over here, and most of the time they shut it down around 1:30-1:45am. It’s quite a buzzkill as most headliners don’t come on till around 12:30am – you pretty much have 1 hour to get drinks and finish them once the guy you’re excited to see goes on.

#3: Same here. No smoking indoors throughout California… most clubs have smoking patios, or an outside area for re-entry. Coming from a non-smoker this is actually a good thing. I’m not super old, but smokers are definitely in the huge minority over here, most likely cuz of the smoking ban + high taxes + anti-smoking propaganda.

Hell, the drinking/clubbing age is 21 here, public transportation is nonexistent, and almost every club closes at 4am – many places 2am.

hey newsc2,

i live in san diego and get so pissed off you can only drink till about 130 or 145 . california is getting lame. if my family wasnt here i would probably move somewhere else. there are too many laws, high taxes, high cost of living , the list goes on, and the state is broke and cant even give you your tax return back. i get tired of the crap we have to put up with. they treat us like kids . if you want to drink later than you should be able to. i recently went to st louis for a wedding. clubs are open till 300 and serve alcohol, you can have a passengar drinkin in your car, and you can have a open container on the street. you cant do anything in cali. fxxxk this state

Gotta say we’re pretty lucky here in the UK then (well some parts of it anyways) as I can party till gone 9am…

lol.

If you wanted to you can more or less drink 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year in Auckland. I think there’s a handful of public holidays that you can’t. There’s a bar in Brisbane, in Australia, right in the heart of the city that never closes.

shrug I’ve lived in the East Coast and Asia, and prefer it here =). Can’t beat the weather and beach.

Not too mad about the drinking thing, as I’m getting older now and can’t party to 6am like I used to – I think the closing time puts pressure on clubs to start hosting events earlier in the night. Would MUCH rather go to an 8pm-2am show than a 12am-6am show. Most of the guys I partied with have gotten full-time, real, professional jobs, and can’t shift their sleep schedule every weekend to have fun. I’m a little luckier with a small business work schedule, but still can’t go out like I used to.
