Doing a little bit of upgrading, current PC is now AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2, I just upgraded from 4GB DDR3 7-7-7-24 Crucial Ballistix memory to 8GB. I’ve also added a new 1 TB HD and now have a total of 2TB and have a ATI 5770.
In addition I’ve changed to motherboard and here is where I need help. (I’ll prob upgrade the processor next year).
The motherboard I’ve changed to is the ASUS Crosshair IV Formula, this thing is made for overclocking which is something I’ve never done, but keen to give it a go.
My CPU cooler is the Xtreme rev.2 - Arctic Cooling, which was pretty much a waste of money as its ****, and I also added 2 case fans, forgot the names but very good, issue is they are far to noisy and have no speed control, so I’ve taken them out, another wate of money.
My case is a cooler master elite 330, again, another wate of my cash, it came with a 460 watt psu however so its sever well untill now.
As I plan to crossfire my 5770 I’ll need a new PSU, I also want a new CPU cooler so I can try overclocking and some good quiet case fans or maybe just a new case.
So does anyone have any tips here both on overclocking and what to get?
I’ve searched around and noctua cpu coolers look good but thats as far as I got, cases so many choices as with case fans! Looking at mid rage level, dont wanna break the back to much as the motherboard, memory and hard drive have cost a fair penny!
que all the “buy a mac” crew
Not reaaly upto date with overclocking as I very happy with my set up - but have you considered watercooling - as this should be alot queter

How does watercooling work? Do you have to fix up pipes to the water mains to the computer or what? lol

You need to pee on your CPU regularly
It works much like in the car
Heres a vid rob

W’oh, that video needs to be in the HTSL forum, the soundtrack is Banging!
Sounds like early Tiesto.
The second track in it… isn’t that one of Roben’s?
Whoever thought water and electronics was a great idea…
Probs the same guy who invented the electric shower lol.
In theory, such bad ideas… but in practice, actually turns out quite well! lol
Looks cool though, my computer is a noisy bstard. I still recon i’d just throw my local computer shop £30 to have them do the job for me, i’m a lazy fcker and when it’s my gear i fear making a royal f*ck up haha.
It’s things like this which is why I love PC’s, you can’t get all this geekery with Macs

I was hoping you wouldn’t recognise it!!
Still, the royalties from that track has earnt me a pretty penny, could afford €600 for 2 bottle of vodka
lol 2002 euro dance! Done by a German I bet
What would you do if a pipe burst! some of them didnt look to secure :\
water cooling could be an idea but its not cheap!

DRIBBLE :w00t:
That PC looks like the computer version of one of those silly Boy’d up cars you see driving about. The ones that have a full body kit, with massive spoiler, and tribal graphics all over it driving up and down the high street all night.
Full of noggins thinking they are cool and that everyone is looking at their mint car, when really its to look at what nob-head is driving that silly thing.
At least the petrol heads get out unlike PC geeks
Alright, here’s some decent answers for you
Watercooling - it’s awesome, if you can afford it. I think it’s a complete waste of money to be honest as it doesn’t let you O/C as much as it’s worth. It does look very cool though. You don’t need to attach it to the mains! You attach it to a reservoir. I’ve set a couple up in my time and they’re very efficient.
Fans - You don’t have to chuck your fans. With a bit of smarts you can rig up some multi voltage switches or Rheostats/pots to manage the voltage and therefore the speed of them. That being said… I bought some decent low noise ones and they’re the tits.
PSU - Get yourself a 750W for all that stuff, it’ll be more than enough for you and they’re not very pricey these days.
RAM - Do you have heatsinks on your ram? It’s excellent for overclocking.
CPU and Heatsink - get some good thermal compound for it, it makes all the difference.
It’s been a while since I did any serious overclocking but from what I understand it’s not changed a great deal since then.
Tweak, test, tweak, test, tweak test… rinse and repeat.
Back in the day I got my Celeron 333 up to 400Mhz bitches!!
Also my Duron 800 up to 1100.
Thems where the days.
multi voltage switches or Rheostats/pots sound interesting, not got a clue where to start however, you got any links as to where I can get this stuff?
got some thermal compound, think its pretty much the best stuff about from my research but under full load my cpu hit 55c with no overclocking so the heat sink and fan need to go. dont think I'll go for water cooling.
Yep ram is covered in heatsinks, its made for overclocking.
My mother board comes with some cool stuff, it has a rog connect where I can hook it to my laptop over overclock it from there - helps when crashes come. Kinda like tuning a car I guess!
Really dont wanna mess about when its a 55oC so need to get the cooling sorted!
