Utilizing theses fx in a track

whats the best way of utilizing these fx sounds into your track that simon patterson uses in all of the intro??

i mean like reverb, how much reverb, delays, what kind of delays, what would be the best e.q position to make it work… etc

please have a quick listen to like the 1st min or 2. thanks

Not 100% sure what you mean or what DAW you are using but I’ll give it a shot.

It really depends on your sound source and how it sounds in the mix with your other sounds but here are some general tips I’ve picked up.

Reverb

1)  It’s usefull to have your reverbs on busses as this can save processing power and you can send various sounds to the same reverb which will make it all feel like their in the same room.

2)  I like to set up 3 to 4 different reverbs on busses straight away so as I’m building my sounds I can shoot the off via sends to my chosen reverb.  This is just basic ofcourse but I usually have a small reverb (maybe like a small plate reverb) I like to use that for things that I just want to add a touch of ambience to or push back in the mix slightly for example drums and or percussive sounds.  In this case you can think of reverb kind of like panning but instead of left to right it is front to back.  I also like a Medium Hall Reverb…I use this for creating space with my big sounds like synths, whooshes or even maybe the big trance clap effect.  My last too reverbs are usually large ones that I use for FX sounds (crashes, risers etc) or automating transitions.

3)  EQ - depends on the sound and how it sounds in the mix but if you find your reverb is making your track sound muddy applying a low cut on reverb busses can help sort it out.  Another trick I like to do especially with the longer reverbs is sidechain compress them to get some slight bounce to them.

Delays

1)  Same as with reverbs I like to set up a few on busses.  I made a post asking what times do other like to use as I think it’s interesting.  I personally like using 1/4, 1/8 and 1/8 triplets for echo type delays and i use tighter settings for thickening up synth sounds.

useful info there rick. thanks. i like the multiple reverb idea actually, sounds good.

what i did mean about the fx thats gettin used in the intro of that track though, is what would be the best approach into making these sounds fit??

everytime i try puttin little fx hits like used in this track, it just goes horribly wrong.

any ideas??

ableton i use rick!!

The FX and transition parts of a track could be tricky I have trouble with it also.  I think they key is to be subtle.  One good reason I like putting reverbs and delays on busses as you can control the amount of send to the FX.  I like to send until I hear the verb or delay and then I back off ever so slightly.

I love Ableton’s Ping Pong Delay i think it sounds great on everything but I usually get carried away with it (so I’ve learned to back off on it).  What I don’t like though is Ableton’s Reverb so I would suggest getting a 3rd part Reverb.

I don’t have speakers here but I’ll give the track a listen later.  I’m sure some other guys will give some feedback as well.

variation is key… and not to take away from any other sounds… your are only useing these to fill gaps.

lots of delay and long reverbs

we have lots of cool stuff coming tomorrow about reverbs.

nice 1 phil!!!

didnt think i was gonna get an answer for that 1.

thanks very much!

i personally was having alot of issues using reverbs . this tutorial about the Reverbs would be perfect. especially when i already treated my room

thanks SA
