Hey guys…
Perhaps someone can help me out. Has anyone ever used both Antares Autotune and/or Melodyne? I think Autotune is more expensive but easier to use. Maybe more powerful? I just get confused when I look at the Melodyne interface. Help please!
I need to do vocals, and unfortunately the only person that I have to sing is myself. I dont really have a pro mic or anything so a standard USB will have to do for now. On top of that, I sing ok (or so I think), but tuning software would help a bunch. Can anyone give any tips?
I have Autotune with my desk but have never used it yet. I’ve heard what it can do but it has a distinct sound of its own
Melodyne is extremely good and sounds ‘smoother’ than Autotune

debatable.
Autotune has the ability to correct and adjust singing on the fly (as you sing into the mic your ‘corrected’ voice comes out of the speakers). With melodyne it records your voice first and then you can go back and tweak as you like.
Iv used melodyne afew times and its great. Outstanding results actually. Auto-tune has a massive reputation and is probably the industry standard so I imagine its just as good.
Be warned though that if your singing is as bad as mind then this software wont help!

Can you elaborate on this? From what I know about Melodyne, it corrects the pitch. I would assume that you would sound like T-Pain or Kanye if you just talked into the mic and auto pitched your voice.
Well singing isnt just about pitch and although melodyne does a good job, if your notes are way off in pitch then adjusting many at a time just isnt going to sound natural. This is only for people that really cant sing (tone deaf)… such as myself! For most people that can sing badly it does a good job of correcting it.
Do you want to correct the harmonics or just create a pitched affect like Kanye? “IM A GAYFISH GAYFISH!!!”
I have been considering picking up Melodyne for quite a while but held off… It would be a great investment for me also, since my singing voice sucks. If it could get me just to “bearable” it would be worthwhile.
One thing to consider is that Melodyne is working on a new feature called “Direct Note Access” that will supposedly allow you to change the pitch of individual notes in a recorded chord. So if you record a 4-note chord played on a guitar, and 1 note is incorrect, you can correct the pitch of that 1 note, correcting the chord.
The issue is that Celemony has repeatedly delayed the release of the DNA feature citing development issues. You can currently buy Melodyne and they will apparently give you a free upgrade to the DNA feature when it’s released. In fact, a lot of people have purchased it and are now upset because DNA hasn’t been released. The latest news can be found in the Melodyne/DNA forum:

The latest estimate for a release/beta seems to be August, although no one will be surprised if that gets pushed back. All of that said, if Celemony ever actually releases the DNA feature, it would be a compelling reason to buy Melodyne over Autotune.
i use auto tune is a quick fixjust sort of slap it on then when i come to finish of the track i usually re-sing the vox then fire it all in to melodyne if auto tune cant sort it… which it usualy cant as i cant sing in tune at all.
become friends with a good singer… the tracks ive had the most success with by a long way where ones where i got a proper singer in on the project.
