What makes a fat bass?

Hey, i know there are a million things you can do with a bass to make it sound good but i was wondering if you could share what you think the key fundamentals are of what makes the basses of todays dance music sound so big/fat/beefy etc.

I have been working very closely with the low end in my tracks and have found things that can help but one thing i wasnt sure of was the overall volume of the bass as in relation to the kick and the lead etc, in particular the sub. In House/Electro the main star of the show is often the bassline, so i have been pushing it together with the kick quite high and letting the other elements go to the back a bit. Now dont get me wrong i can get my basslines sounding great and im not having any real trouble in the mid/high ranges i just cant seem to get a nice round thick bottom, its a really weird phenomenon its like there is something im missing and i really think its the sub. I mean it used to be that kicks would peak at around 60hz and basslines sit around 100 but ive been analysing tracks and they are literally going to around the 40hz peaks now for the low. Where are the magic frequencies, and do you have any tips for getting a nice boom in the low?

Mix sound totally spot on to me…

the vocal on the other hand is not working for me… way too shouty and it isn’t in the right key for the track.

I can understand the shouty bit, the only thing is the vocals are from a sample pack thing and i used their midi…

Any ideas? :stuck_out_tongue:

Is a bit like the answers are not related to the question. I haven’t seen a link to a preview.

And I noticed as well that most tracks have a big peak around the 40-50Hz.

Yeah dont worry about it im gonna have to discard this track and start on something new. But if the mix is spot on then thats cool and i know whatballpark i need to be in.
